Exhibited collaborative work with MUSASHI at the “MUSASHI Exhibition of the World” at the Osaka-Kansai Expo The “MUSASHI of the World Solo Exhibition,” held at the Osaka-Kansai Expo in July, featured approximately 150 companies, organizations, and celebrities, and exhibited approximately 100 collaborative works with the artist MUSASHI. Among the many people and organizations who colored MUSASHI’s sketches, one work stood out as particularly vivid, bright, and imbued with a unique worldview. It was by Maki Nishiyama.

Flowers galore, rainbows, and flapping birds. A work that seems to encapsulate all the positive aspects of life. Through a mutual acquaintance, I was invited to participate in the “MUSASHI Solo Exhibition of the World,” and my participation was realized. While utilizing MUSASHI’s floral motif, the piece is bright and uplifting, brilliantly utilizing the white space and filling it with a variety of colorful flowers, nuts, birds, rainbows, hearts, and more. “I wonder what perspective MUSASHI has when he faces the canvas, how intensely he engages with it, and what the starting point is for him to begin painting. Sensitivity can only be expressed through what a person has felt in their life, and it’s definitely different for each individual, so I’d like to hear about MUSASHI’s current sensibilities,” Nishiyama says, revealing his true craftsmanship. Ever since she was little, she’s loved making things and creative activities, and that passion has continued even as she grew up and started working as a model and TV personality. However, when it comes to being called an artist, she modestly admits, “I’m not yet fully aware of it, so I feel it’s presumptuous to call myself an artist.” My work as a model and talent, and my thoughts on creative activities What started out as an extension of a hobby, but with a renewed desire to “leave behind my artwork,” led me to start painting on canvas a few years ago when I was caught up in some trouble with my production company. I was completely unable to work and had no source of income. Still, when I wanted to give a gift to someone important to me, I wondered, “What can I do to express my feelings in a tangible form?” As a result, I thought of that person and painted something original as a gift. I was so happy that the person enjoyed it that I continued to do so. A job that showcases oneself and showcasing the work one has created may seem like polar opposites, but “modeling and talent are jobs where you stand in the spotlight and become the product. It feels like I’m working with everyone to create the product that I am and putting it out there. The mindset is the same, and I do this job with a mind that loves creativity.” It seems like she feels like she’s creating a work of art using the material known as “Maki Nishiyama.”

Waking up in the morning and being able to go out into society, or being able to respond immediately when someone needs you, are not things you take for granted. It’s true that just knowing about it beforehand doesn’t mean you can deal with it, but I think if someone who’s been through it can share their experience and say, ‘This is what actually happened to me,’ it could be a relief to others in the same situation, as they might realize, ‘I’m not alone.'” “It’s not that I make negative comments, but I want to be the kind of person who doesn’t hide that dark side.” As I spoke, I felt the same positive vibe I sensed in Nishiyama’s work. At the same time, I sensed his harmonious philosophy that both light and dark are good, his honesty and strength in accepting and loving all of humanity’s negativity. “I want to express what I have inside me now, after my experiences. By sharing it, I hope to be able to support younger generations. I hope to be someone who makes them think, ‘I’m glad I heard these words, I’m glad I saw this picture, I’m glad I got to know this child.'” I’m sure she will continue to sublimate and convey her own experiences and the emotions that arise from them through her work as a model and TV personality, as well as through words, art, and other forms of expression.
