One of Tomio Marche’s defining features is its close relationship with the producers. The conversations were lively as we discussed our favorite things, making us even more eager to support the artists. This event, which began in 2012, served as a venue for aspiring artists and creators active in Chiba to showcase their work. This year marks its 13th year and 21st anniversary. To date, it has grown into one of Chiba’s leading craft events, with a total of 2,100 artists and over 70,000 visitors participating. As a “hub connecting makers and consumers,” Tomio Marche will continue to take on new challenges and build the foundation for Chiba’s handicraft culture that will remain for 10 and even 100 years to come. Background of Tomio Marche We want to expand the talents and opportunities for handicraft artists. Tomio Co., Ltd., a custom-built home builder in Chiba, has always focused on building homes that embrace “your unique lifestyle.” In the process, we noticed that many of our customers were creating handcrafted pieces as their special talents. However, many of these wonderful pieces had no opportunity to be exhibited or sold, meaning that the talents of their creators remained hidden from the world. So, as a company involved in the same “manufacturing” business, we wanted to create a place where our customers could leverage their strengths and widely showcase their work. “Tomio Marche” was born from this idea. Since its inception, it has served as a forum for connecting budding artists, creators aiming to become independent, and general customers who love making things. This year marks its 13th year and 21st anniversary. The number of Tomio Marche exhibitors has expanded from 38 to 140. Supporting a total of 2,100 artists The first Tomio Marche was held in 2012. At the time, it was a small two-day event with 38 exhibitors and approximately 100 visitors, held in the courtyard of Tomio’s headquarters (then in Ushibashi-cho, Hanamigawa Ward, Chiba City). Since then, word has spread through word of mouth among artists and handicraft enthusiasts, and the number of exhibitors has increased with each event. Today, with a total of approximately 2,100 exhibitors and over 70,000 visitors, it has become one of the largest handmade events in Chiba City.

Bringing craft culture to Chiba’s new appeal Many handmade items have cultural value that goes beyond hobbies or commercial products. Some of the works reflect traditional crafts and regional characteristics, while others combine modern design and techniques to create new styles and hold great potential for revitalizing local industries. Tomio Marche not only provides a platform for creators who are the driving force behind local culture to showcase their work, but also serves as a local community where handcraft lovers can interact directly with local residents. Now, in a time when the value and story of one-of-a-kind items are valued, we will continue to hold Tomi Marche with the mission of fostering a “craft culture” that will become a new attraction for Chiba and continue for 10 years, even 100 years.

Her original goods are also very popular. ■ Characteristics of Tomio Marche 1. Every item is a unique, carefully crafted piece that reflects the artist’s own unique style. This market brings together accessories, leather goods, wool felt goods, and other items lovingly crafted by artists. One of the joys of Tomio Marche is the excitement of searching for your favorite piece among the rows of one-of-a-kind items.

Enjoy direct conversation with the artisans. Crafters who love handmade items and buyers (everyone) can talk directly and deepen their connections. It serves as a place for a real community through craftsmanship. 3. A wide variety of hands-on workshops where you can create things One of the reasons for its popularity is the wide variety of craft workshops that can be enjoyed by both adults and children. This time, a total of 11 stores will be offering a variety of experiences, including crafting miscellaneous goods using alcohol ink art and stained glass.

To ensure that Tomio Marche provides a platform for aspiring artists and connects with the general public who love handmade crafts, we hope to hold workshops, artist networking events, regular exhibitions, and more throughout the year. We also hope to make Tomio Marche a platform for Chiba’s craftspeople, and foster a “craft culture” that will become a new attraction for Chiba. ■Comments from the organizer “Tomio Marche was started with the goal of spreading the talents of local artists to the world. It has connected many ‘crafters’ and ‘people who love handmade crafts,’ and has become a place to foster Chiba’s culture. We hope to continue supporting the challenges of young artists and those aspiring to start their own businesses, and to connect the local craft culture to the future.”
