The visual book “Ocean Waves THE VISUAL COLLECTION,” based on Studio Ghibli’s “legendary masterpiece,” the animated film “Ocean Waves,” has been reprinted for the fourth time. The definitive book on “Ocean Waves,” another Studio Ghibli masterpiece beloved throughout the ages. “Ocean Waves” (original story by Saeko Himuro) is a feature-length animated film produced by Studio Ghibli as a TV special in 1993. Set in Kochi and Tokyo, this film depicts the irreplaceable days of protagonists Rikako Muto and Taku Morizaki, two high school students. Under the banner of the “Studio Ghibli Young Production Group,” the film was created with dreams and passion by young staff members who represent the future of Japanese animation, including Director Tomomitsu Mochizuki, Animation Director Katsuya Kondo, and Art Director Naoya Tanaka. Since its first broadcast on Nippon Television on May 5, 1993, this legendary masterpiece has been handed down through the generations. In recent years, young audiences, especially through the internet, have been “rediscovering” its appeal. A theatrical re-release in March 2024 at Bunkamura Le Cinema Shibuya Miyashita in Shibuya, Tokyo, was a long-running hit, selling out every day, making it a symbol of the Reiwa “revival” phenomenon. This book, published after 31 years, generously incorporates as many visuals as currently available. In addition to the film story told with the best 30 cuts selected by Director Mochizuki himself, various color illustrations with beautiful image quality, character settings, art settings, and more, this volume includes the first full color collection of 140 beautiful illustrations by Katsuya Kondo, including unused illustrations, created for the original manga serialization in the monthly magazine “Animage.” Additionally, character drafts drawn before the serialization and valuable materials from that time, taken from Kondo’s own sketchbooks, are also included for the first time. The gallery at the end of the book features a wide selection of posters, flyers, promotional materials, product covers and jackets from past series, merchandise, and more. Included are interviews with Director Mochizuki, Animation Director Kondo, and Producer Nozomu Takahashi, both from the time of production and newly interviewed specifically for this book. This gorgeous visual book fully conveys the charm of Ghibli’s legendary masterpiece, “Ocean Waves,” for Generation Z who have discovered new value in this work, as well as for fans who were with it in 1993.
