For TOEIC Day 2025, we implemented the “RESTART with TOEIC Tests” experiential program, supporting those who want to “challenge themselves again” using English. The program offered four special experiences: “Interacting with Foreigners through a Sushi Chef Experience,” “Teaching English at a Nursery School,” “English Conversation with Wicky,” and “Interviewing FC Tokyo Player Alexander Scholz.” Thirteen applicants were selected by lottery to participate in these experiences. A video of the event has been posted on YouTube as part of the “RESTART with TOEIC Tests” project.

A total of nine people participated, including four local participants and five foreigners, and experienced international exchange through sushi-making at Tsuribune Chaya Zauo Shibuya Branch. The experience began with fishing for horse mackerel in the restaurant’s fishing pond. While the participants struggled, cheers erupted every time a lively horse mackerel was caught, creating a natural opportunity for them to bond. The following sushi-related quiz followed, and participants discussed and arrived at the answers in teams, broadening the circle of communication across nationalities. During the sushi-making experience, participants received instruction in the art of nigiri sushi and tried their hand at making gunkanmaki sushi. Afterward, participants enjoyed lively conversation while tasting the sushi they made themselves, creating a moment of cultural
understanding and learning about different values through food.

On the day, two participants and the comedy duo Kaminari were welcomed as special guests, and a total of four teachers enjoyed interacting with the children. During the experience, participants played three English games: “I Spy,” in which
participants use clues to find objects around them; “Simon Says,” in which participants move according to instructions; and “Category Game,” in which participants must answer English words in order according to a given category. The children, who normally take English classes without using Japanese, enjoyed the games with great energy, and the four teachers were amazed at their high level of English proficiency and energy. Despite the short time they spent together, they quickly became friends, and at the end, many were sad to say goodbye, making for an experience filled with smiles. Touched by the cheerfulness of the children, the participants were reminded of the joy of English and the power of children.

On the day, Wicky moderated the conversation with four participants in a relaxed atmosphere. The experience began with self-introductions by all participants. Following the event’s theme of “RESTART,” Wicky then asked, “What does RESTART mean to you?” Participants shared their goals, such as “to meet my favorite actor” or “to go to my favorite place,” and their desire to improve their English. Wicky not only offered advice on English expressions, but also offered warm words of encouragement, saying, “Just like I once did, the important thing is to first listen to your English out loud. Don’t worry, laugh and have fun.” Smiles naturally spread throughout the venue, and it was impressive to see participants communicating their thoughts in English. Finally, the event concluded with a surprise birthday cake for Wicky, who turned 89 on September 26th, and a chorus of “Happy Birthday” from all attendees.

On the day, three participants visited FC Tokyo’s home ground, the FC Tokyo Kodama Ground, and enjoyed a special time. During the interview, Alexander Scholz put the atmosphere at ease with his cheerful smile, easing the participants’ tension and patiently answering their questions. Each participant was asked questions in English for approximately five minutes, and they discussed topics such as their mindset when adapting to a new environment, the language learning secrets that have enabled them to master eight languages, and the mental strategies they use to stay competitive. After the interview, Alexander Scholz commented with a smile, “I was really entertained because I was asked many questions that were different from the usual soccer-related questions.” For the participants, it was a valuable opportunity to communicate their thoughts in English through direct interaction with top athletes.

Test results are scored on a scale of 10 to 990, and the scoring scale is always maintained constant. The test is highly regarded for its high quality, which allows it to accurately measure English proficiency and is used by companies and organizations for promotion and advancement criteria, as well as for employee recruitment. It is also widely used in schools for entrance exams and credit recognition. Approximately 1,935,000 people will take the test in Japan in 2024, bringing the total number of test-takers to over 50 million since the test’s inception in 1979. Starting in April 2020, the special group test system (IP test) for companies, schools, and organizations will introduce an online test, taking approximately one hour. The public test will use the traditional multiple-choice format (two hours). TOEIC(R) Speaking & Writing Tests (TOEIC(R) S&W) This test measures your ability to speak and write in English, which is necessary for effective communication in everyday life and global business. Multiple raters certified by ETS, the test development organization, will grade the test fairly, and will give a score from 0 to 200, rather than a pass/fail rating. Test takers will also receive a three-point rating for pronunciation and intonation/accent. Like the TOEIC® Listening & Reading Test, the test uses everyday and business situations, but does not include questions that require specialized business English, knowledge of a specific industry or field, or knowledge of specific events related to a specific country’s history or culture.
Approximately 39,000 people will take the test in Japan in 2024. The Institute for International Business Communication (IIBC) Founded in 1986 with the basic philosophy of “promoting the internationalization of people and companies.” With the mission of “promoting smooth communication in global business,” we collaborate with related organizations both in Japan and overseas to develop the TOEIC® Program and global human resource development programs.
