Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo. Specializing in immunology. Recipient of the Noguchi Hideyo Memorial Award for Medicine, the Emil von Behring Prize, and the Asahi Prize, among others. In 1984, he was awarded the Person of Cultural Merit. He had a deep knowledge of Noh and created new Noh plays such as “The Well of Ignorance,” “Song of Despair,” and “Isseki Sennin.” His publications include “The Semantics of Immunity” (Osaragi Jiro Award, Seidosha), “The Semantics of Life” and “The Noh Stage in the Brain” (both Shinchosha), and “The Complete Poems of Tomio Tada: Utauranai” (Fujiwara Shoten). He passed away in 2010. ■Photograph: Toshiro Morita Photographer. Born in Tokyo in 1937. Graduated from Musashino Art University. His photographs focus on classical performing arts, such as Noh, Kyogen, and Kabuki. His unique style eliminates unnecessary staging and lighting, allowing him to capture the breath of the performers in his photographs, and he has held solo exhibitions across the United States.
