philosophy, Mandom has been working to create new value with the aspirations of “imagining what makes people happy” and “creating value that is useful to people.” In this context, we have applied our unique technology and knowledge to develop and provide products that support life in space through open innovation, in order to help astronauts and others living in extreme environments (microgravity, closed spaces, limited water and supplies) to live comfortably and in their own way. ■ Past Initiatives In 2022, Mandom’s “Gatsby “Gatsby Space Shower Paper” was first used as an onboard item on astronaut Koichi Wakata’s ISS (International Space Station) mission, and has since been used four consecutive times on missions by astronauts Satoshi Furukawa, Takuya Onishi, and Kimiya Yui. This marks the first time for a Japanese cosmetics company to do so. The “Gatsby Space Shower Paper” featured on the ISS mission employs Mandom’s proprietary “Kai-tech Zero G” technology, which applies over 20 years of research into TRP channels (skin sensors that detect temperature and stimuli). This technology provides a comfortable, refreshing shower-like sensation even in the space environment, where water resources are limited and the use of highly volatile ethanol is strictly restricted. This technology offers a new option for those living in environments where alcohol use is restricted, both in space and on Earth, and for those with sensitive skin, potentially improving the comfort of our future lives. Mandom will continue to create new value and conduct research and development to make people’s lives more enjoyable, comfortable, and fulfilling. ■Kai-tech Zero G Technology Mandom focuses on sensory stimulation on the skin to improve the functionality and feel of its cosmetics. We are conducting research using TRP channels (trip channels), the sensory sensors of cells. “Kai-tech Technology” is Mandom’s proprietary technology that leverages this knowledge to thoroughly pursue a more comfortable cooling sensation. The “Kai-tech Zero G Technology” we are using this time builds on the comfortable cooling sensation of our conventional “Kai-tech Technology” to achieve a comfortable cooling sensation even in environments where alcohol cannot be used.
