I want to convey to people through the medium of photography the speed and beauty I’ve admired since I was a child, and the excitement and thrill I feel when getting behind the wheel. With this strong desire in mind, I embarked on my career as a photographer for CAR GRAPHIC magazine. There, I learned that photography goes beyond superficial beauty and captures the intentions and passion behind it. When photographing road cars, I always consider the culture and history of the country of production, as well as the intentions of the designers and engineers, and how to express the spirit embodied in their design. In races, I follow the joys and struggles of the teams and drivers as the cars speed by. The 24 Hours of Le Mans is particularly special. How can I capture the drama that continues day and night, the time when man and machine compete together? Captivated by the challenge and fascination of this process, I have been drawn to Le Mans time and time again. Capturing the atmosphere of a moment and the passion of the people around cars, without pretense. This has been Minoru Kobayashi’s unwavering policy when taking photographs throughout his nearly half-century career as a photographer. I hope that through Minoru Kobayashi’s photographs, you can sense the breath of those involved with cars and racing, the passage of time, and your own love and memories for them. ■Artist Profile Minoru Kobayashi Born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1955. After graduating from the Department of
Photography at Nihon University College of Art, he worked as a staff photographer for the automotive magazine “CAR GRAPHIC” for eight years. He continues to photograph nearly 20 motorsports races per year both domestically and internationally, and has covered the 24 Hours of Le Mans almost every year since 1989.
