Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture Press Release: October 17, 2025 A work-in-progress presentation (presentation) for the “Tokyo Borderless Theatre Project” (TBTP), a theatrical creation project involving foreigners living in Japan, will be held on November 1st (Sat) and 2nd (Sun) – Initiatives toward multicultural coexistence using theater – Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre (located in Toshima Ward, Tokyo) is working to address social issues and promote multicultural coexistence. One such initiative, the “Tokyo Borderless Theatre Project” (TBTP), a creative project that develops theater from intercultural dialogue, will hold a
work-in-progress presentation at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre on November 1st and 2nd, 2025. The 20 participants, selected through a public call for entries, come from a diverse range of nationalities, including Ukraine, Lithuania, Canada, France, China, Vietnam, and Japan, and represent a wide range of ages and occupations. The creative advisor will be Bassam Ghazi, a theater educator and director with a proven track record in creating community theater in Germany. Participants will present “their own stories” that they have created themselves, using multiple languages and a variety of non-verbal means.

This project is part of “Creative Well-Being Tokyo” (sponsored by Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Arts Council Tokyo), a project working to improve accessibility to arts and culture so that everyone, from infants to the elderly, regardless of whether they have a disability or not, and regardless of language or cultural differences, can easily encounter and participate in cultural facilities and art programs. [Work information] Work-in-Progress “Door to Door” *Theatrical performance While living in Tokyo, there are times when you suddenly recall memories of your roots and hometown. This “trigger” can be a sound, a smell, or a sight. Here, we call such things “doors.” People with foreign roots will find “doors” in their daily lives and express their roots through theater.
