The upholstery features custom fabric that reflects the artist’s unique style. Born in Utrecht, Netherlands, and currently living in Palma, Mallorca, van Riemsdyk was chosen for this project because of his style, which exudes refinement yet is still rough. His work creates a unique harmony by contrasting the simplicity of primitive brushstrokes with refined forms reminiscent of traditional Japanese calligraphy. He embodied the exquisite balance between contrasting elements that has made Maxalto a leading brand in contemporary classic design for half a century. This journey began with the founding vision of Afra and Tobia Scarpa and continued by Antonio Citterio. 2025 marks Citterio’s 30th anniversary with Maxalto. As the brand reinterprets the timeless elegance of interwar Paris and portrays a bourgeois lifestyle that values restraint and essentiality, van Riemsdyk’s interpretations have become even more captivating. Their approach embraces the changing times and innovative manufacturing techniques without becoming contrived or conservative. “In art and in life, balance can be found both in contrast and in harmony.” “Whether Maxalto and I succeeded in this is up to the viewer. But I believe the end result represents a very high level of linguistic harmony.” – Patrick van Riemsdyk The play of references between the conceptual worlds of the artist and the brand also involves an element of manual craftsmanship, so the choice of painters is no coincidence. Just as van Riemsdyk’s paintings are the result of his deft brushwork, Maxalto furniture is crafted by artisans who master time-honored techniques such as upholstery and woodworking. While these works may be called craft rather than art, the artistry within them certainly participates in the eternal dialogue between form and function. The artist recounts the journey of his own creation and speaks of form: “This is my first time painting furniture, and I decided to treat the Lilum sofa as a sculpture. Its rounded, almost organic form comes to life only when someone sits or lies on it. I found a three-dimensional effect in the sofa’s curves that I couldn’t achieve in my paintings.” – Patrick van Riemsdyk

<50th Anniversary | Special Edition> This collaboration with van Riemsdyk further strengthens Maxalto’s connection with the art world, which began in 2021. Over the past five years, this initiative has produced many fruitful results, including encounters with many young talents. Our first partner is Green Wise, a company founded in Japan in 1905 that expanded to Italy in 2019 with floral and landscape projects. Together with Maxalto, Green Wise explored the relationship between design, art, and craftsmanship, creating four pieces for Camerae, a spatial composition that embodies Maxalto’s worldview. Two of the pieces are crafted using lotus and rapeseed leaves, while the other two are crafted using loquat and willow branches, creating a beautifully balanced effect. The following year, for the second act of Camerae, Polish-American sculptor Karolina Maszkiewicz was
commissioned to create four kinetic works. One piece is crafted from solid wood, while the other three are crafted from organic materials, symbolizing various spaces in the home. In 2023, the Camerae Act II project will be developed as Maxalto’s new retail identity. The presentation is comprised of a series of independent spaces organized like a gallery, showcasing the collection’s furniture in dialogue with precious objects and artworks, encased in a tall, illuminated wall made from a material resembling washi paper. In 2022, Japanese composer Koki Nakano will be featured. He translated Maxalto’s worldview into music, expressing it in the composition “Surroundings.” Finally, Maxalto collaborated with Steinway & Sons, one of the world’s most renowned and prestigious piano manufacturers. The result of this collaboration is “Symphoniae,” an event celebrating the intersection of music and design through music inspired by freedom, courage, change, and creativity. As part of Maxalto’s 50th anniversary celebrations, a highly popular classic model from its catalog is being released as a special edition, limited to 50 units.

His simple yet distinctive style gives each of these 50 pieces a distinct and distinctive personality.” Antonio Citterio Lilum 50 is a precious limited edition of 50 units created to commemorate Maxalto’s 50th anniversary. The upholstery, chosen exclusively for this occasion, is made of high-quality linen, transformed into a canvas by Dutch artist Patrick van Riemsdyk using reproduction techniques developed in our in-house R&D center. Van Riemsdyk’s rough yet elegant brushwork provides a sophisticated contrast to Lilum’s rounded forms, while at the same time creating a clean, minimalist composition. The result is a new embodiment of the masterful blend of languages and styles that has long been a hallmark of Maxalto.

The strength of these materials almost makes you forget the piece’s original function.” – Antonio Citterio Laser-cut bronze structure and solid Italian walnut top. These are the distinguishing features of the special limited edition Pathos table, created to celebrate Maxalto’s 50th anniversary. These finishes add even more elegance and refinement to this classic, designed by Antonio Citterio in 2011 and still highly regarded in our catalog. The splendor of the bronze, combined with the free and unconventional personality of the unfinished edges, is the embodiment of Maxalto’s classic and contemporary style, remaining true to the brand’s essence while never falling into monotony and demonstrating a stance of constant evolution.
