Episode #52 of the BS Yoshimoto program “Higashino Yamazato no Input,” starring Koji Higashino and Ryota Yamazato (Nankai Candies), will air on Sunday, October 19th. (New episodes start at 11:00 PM on the third and fourth Sundays of each month. *If there are five weeks in a week, the episode will air on the fourth and fifth Sundays.) Grunge Toyama explains the legendary band! “Higashino Yamazato’s Input” is a program in which Higashino, who has many regular programs and also serves as the Director of Publicity for BS Yoshimoto, and Yamazato, the popular host of the morning information program “DayDay.”, receive “input” from young people by having them present popular content and unknown, interesting entertainment works. This time, Yamazato’s fellow member, Daisuke Toyama (Grunge), will appear as the presenter and talk about the legendary band THEE MICHELLE GUN ELEPHANT (hereafter, Michelle). Yamazato, 48, and Toyama, 46, are both in the same generation. When Yamazato revealed that he listened to the music in real time but “only knew the major songs,” Toyama posed the question, “For example, what kind of songs?” Higashino was taken aback by the exchange.
“Toyama-kun… Can you stop saying ‘for example?’ like you’re giving Yama-chan a close-up?” he admonished, drawing laughter. Yamazato humorously played the victim, saying, “It was really scary,” to which Toyama responded, “I just wanted to ask for reference (of course, that wasn’t my intention)!”

They released eight original albums. In an era when the internet wasn’t as widespread as it is today, their music reached artists overseas, even earning praise from Joe Strummer, lead singer of The Clash. Furthermore, the Finnish rock band US, which debuted in 2024, used Michelle’s music as their entrance sound effects, and they’re still beloved today. Toyama shared an episode that encapsulated both the band’s feelings for its fans and its rock philosophy: when lead singer Yusuke Chiba was walking around, he pointed to a building and asked his manager a question. His heart-stirring words left both Higashino and Yamazato deeply moved, saying, “So cool…” Furthermore, when the topic turned to guitarist Abe Futoshi, who joined Michelle later, Toyama commented, “Abe Futoshi’s joining gave us incredible explosive power and acceleration.” He then recounted an episode. The conversation also went off on a tangent, occasionally discussing topics such as listening to Michelle’s song “Out Blues,” Chiba’s incredibly cool opening line at a live concert, and the film “Blue Spring,” which featured a Michelle song as its theme song.
