Set at Nyudosaki Lighthouse, towering over the Oga Peninsula in Akita Prefecture, shadow puppet artist Kohei Kawamura will paint a magnificent story on a massive canvas measuring 5m high and 7m wide. The story begins 70 million years ago, when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth, and traces the history of the Oga Peninsula’s topography and the relationship between the sea and humans. This shadow puppet performance is the first of its kind to focus on a lighthouse, and local elementary school students will also participate. They will learn about the role of lighthouses, the origins of the geopark, and Oga’s local dish, “ishiyaki ryori,” before collaborating to create parts of the shadow puppets. The scenes of fish, sea creatures, and ishiyaki ryori drawn by the children will be a valuable experience that deepens their understanding of the region’s nature and culture. In the shadow play, a fantastical world of light and shadow is created, depicting the Nyudosaki Lighthouse as it continues to illuminate the sea through the ages. The light of the lighthouse not only ensures the safety of navigation, but is also expressed as a symbol of hope that connects the history and culture of the region to the future.
