SOMPO Holdings, Inc. Press Release: October 20, 2025 About the Sompo Museum of Art’s 50th Anniversary
Commemorative Events ~With the theme of “Rediscovering Art, Shinjuku, and the Heart,” we will hold commemorative exhibitions, community collaboration projects, and more~ SOMPO Museum of Art (Location: Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo; Director: Nishiwaki Yoshikazu; hereafter referred to as “the Museum”) opened in 1976 and will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2026. To commemorate this milestone and express our gratitude for your continued support, we will be holding a commemorative event themed “Rediscovering Art, Shinjuku, and the Heart” for approximately one year and two months from January 2026 to the end of February 2027. Looking back on our 50-year history and taking a new step toward the future, this event will feature five commemorative exhibitions, as well as a variety of local projects and the development of original merchandise. Sompo Holdings, Inc. (Group CEO, President and Representative Executive Officer: Mikio Okumura) and Sompo Japan Insurance Inc. (President and Representative Director: Koji Ishikawa) established the museum to deliver “true emotion” and “spiritual enrichment” to society through culture and the arts, providing many people with the opportunity to experience authentic art. Going forward, Sompo will continue to contribute to communities and society through culture and the arts, striving to realize its purpose of “creating a future filled with security, health, and wellbeing.” 1. Devleeschauwer 3. Yamaguchi Kayo Exhibition (tentative title) Saturday, July 11, 2026 – Sunday, August 30, 2026 This exhibition will survey the artistic career of Japanese painter Yamaguchi Kayo (1899-1984), from his early years to his final years, focusing on three of his representative works from the Sompo Museum of Art’s collection.

Collaboration Projects The museum will be releasing original 50th anniversary merchandise and collaborative merchandise, including items related to Shinjuku in collaboration with nearby stores. We are also planning events and campaigns that can be enjoyed not only inside the museum but also in the Shinjuku area. Details will be released on the special page as they become available. The Yasuda Fire & Marine Insurance Art Foundation (now Sompo Art Foundation) was established as the operating organization. Seiji Togo, who had a connection with the company at the time, donated his collection to the museum, which opened as the Seiji Togo Art Museum. In 1987, Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” was added to the collection, and the museum is now known as the only museum in Asia where visitors can view Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers.” In April 2020, the museum changed its name to the “Sompo Museum of Art,” and in July of the same year, it moved to a six-story museum building constructed on an adjacent site. The museum hosts “unique and fascinating exhibitions” on a wide range of themes, from Western painting to contemporary art, approximately five times a year. On Friday, August 29, 2025, the museum reached a cumulative total of 7 million visitors.
