An unmanned mine-clearance boat equipped on the destroyer Mogami navigated to the area containing the mines and dropped a self-propelled mine-clearance munition, which was then remotely controlled from the Mogami and successfully detonated. This was a world first* for mine clearance using an unmanned system. In this issue of Military Report, we will report on training to dispose of mines using a “surface drone.” *This marks the world’s first successful mine disposal operation using a remotely controlled surface drone for mine disposal from the command post of a destroyer (FFM).
