This exhibition, his first solo exhibition with our gallery, will feature approximately 15 oil paintings created during his time in Berlin. In addition, an exhibition commemorating the publication of the collection “echo” will be held simultaneously in the adjacent space @zone. Following on from his solo exhibition “mirror” in Berlin, this exhibition “reflect” and the collection “echo” follow on from his solo exhibition “mirror.” This exhibition, which is themed around the coming and going between the inner self and reality, is a trilogy named to represent the changing sense of distance between the two, and invites viewers to reexamine the relationship between themselves and the world.
Seven years ago, I was in Paris. I rented a residence facility where an acquaintance was staying for just one month, and even though I was overseas, I was painting without going out much. They say you’re fearless when you’re young, but back then, I was anxious about a lot of things and scared of a lot of things. I just took walks in the forest on the premises, and I thought it would be weird to stay cooped up, so I decided to go to Germany for some reason. It was dimly lit, and the scenery was all gray, and very inviting. Perhaps it resonated with my gloomy self. I’m in Germany now. The Rosary Church designed by Matisse, Gaudi’s Casa Batlló, the Pyramids of Giza, the Jungfraujoch in Switzerland… I want to see and absorb as much as I can during my one-year stay, so I’ve visited more places than I can count on both hands. I also visited the residency again. I had completely forgotten about it until then, but with a wave of nostalgia, I remembered my frail self, groping my way forward. I think I’ve become more fearless and human now. But I was able to achieve this because I worked hard back then and didn’t give up on myself. If I could travel back in time, I’d praise you. Thank you, me from 7 years ago Yamashita Atsuko 2025.11
