What kind of people live there, and what kind of lives have they led? “Heartful World” is an irregularly broadcast documentary in which the director travels alone to search for “heartfulness.” Starting Saturday, October 18th, four new episodes will be broadcast over four consecutive weeks. The second new episode, airing Saturday, October 25th, continues from the previous week and focuses on the Kamiyagawa Erosion Control Dam in Kyoto. After a year of research… will it really work? Together with studio MC Hikorohee, we’ll bring you a world you’ve never known before.

Kyoto’s Kamiyagawa Erosion Control Dam was built to hold back landslides during disasters. After a year of interviews with people who had no choice but to live there, the residents are finally opening up. A 78-year-old Korean woman who has lived here for about 50 years has made a living by playing the traditional Korean instrument, the janggu. The performance she was performing was a “Yakuza Banquet.” “How can I be scared? My family is poor.” She continued working at that job because of her special feelings for her parents. Image
