“Cross-stage” is a new live show series brought to you by MTV, featuring two groups with a mutual connection. This commemorative first installment featured Aqua Timez, who are reuniting for a limited time to celebrate their 20th anniversary since their debut, and TOMOO, the popular singer-songwriter whose first Nippon Budokan concert in May was a huge success and who is now supported by many famous artists. During the encore, the two groups collaborated on each other’s songs, creating a rare performance that can only be seen here. TOMOO took the stage first. They kicked off the set with “Ginger,” featuring a lively piano intro, and the crowd spontaneously erupted in applause during the following “10 Seconds in Love.” In their opening MC, they expressed their gratitude to the packed audience, saying, “My dream has come true! I’m so happy to be able to perform with Aqua Timez, a band I’ve been listening to since I was a child.” They then performed “LUCKY,” “Yoake no Kimi e,” and “Bacon Epi.” After the MC, she performed “Mado” (a song she played on piano) and “Grapefruit Moon” with the addition of a band, immersing the audience in her own world. From there, she energized the audience with “Superstar,” “Othello,” and “Present,” which all took on a brighter tone. In her final MC, she expressed her gratitude, saying, “Aqua Timez have taught me that protecting a person’s heart isn’t just about a sharp sword or a solid, unbreakable shield,” and concluded the show with “Super Ball.” After TOMOO’s performance, the members of Aqua Timez appeared under white lights and began their first song, “Raspberry Jam.” The audience, bathed in pink and red lights, waved their hands from side to side, naturally letting themselves go. Songs like “Tsubomi” and “Negao” followed, as if carefully addressing the audience. The fourth song, “Pascal,” featured introspective lyrics that questioned one’s own way of life, quietly heating up the atmosphere in the venue. “I’m really proud to be able to perform a duo with TOMOO-chan. I’m really happy that you say you like Aqua Timez’s music,” said Taishi in his MC. Following this, they debuted “if you come,” their final song for the reunion, and then thrilled the audience with “Time Machine” and “Sing Along.” In their final MC remarks, they said, “Since this is a duo with TOMOO-chan, we tried out a rare setlist full of songs we don’t usually play. Thank you, TOMOO-chan, for letting us take on this challenge!” They then concluded the show with Aqua Timez’s signature song, “Ketsumei no Asa ni,” which was met with warm, thunderous applause. In response to the calls for an encore, Futoshi and Tomoo came on stage. At Futoshi’s request, who said, “I chose these lyrics because I wanted to dedicate them to the other members,” they performed Tomoo’s song “Good Luck.” The two’s voices echoed throughout the venue, accompanied by Tomoo’s piano. “Thanks to Aqua Timez, I was able to take a step forward despite my timidity and get on stage,” said TOMOO in a message that elicited applause from the audience, before Aqua Timez and TOMOO performed their signature song, “A Thousand Nights Beyond.” TOMOO’s straightforward voice and Futoshi’s powerful vocals added depth to the warm yet sad love song, making it a memorable final song that was fitting for concluding a special night. MTV will broadcast the entire concert, uncut, starting at 8:30 PM on Saturday, December 6th.
