Frontman Ewan Manning had this to say about the new song, “The Burning Of Cork.” “The title of this song comes from the terrorist attack on Cork, Ireland, by the British Black and Tans in December 1920. The album was recorded this summer at London’s RAK Studios with producer Shrink and will be released on February 13th via the buzzworthy label So Young Records. The 10-track album is both epic and intimate, overwhelmed with romanticism and divine imagery. It perfectly captures the inner potential the band has shown since their early days. The diverse range of songs ranges from violent, cynicism, and resentment (“Anhedonia,” “The Burning Of Cork,” “Barbed Wire”) to innocent, vulnerable songs. The contrast between the intense first half and the darker second half is as clear as the A and B sides of a record, reflecting the band members’ deep attachment to records. The album’s diverse sound ranges from simple, sincere folk to dramatic, melodramatic gothic rock, with unexpected twists and turns. Ewan explains the inspiration for the album “Masquerade”: “This album is about stripping away the masks and pretenses we all wear. The curtain rises, and cynicism takes over. It’s really easy to be cynical, but it’s much harder to be hopeful and sincere. I’ve learned from performing and touring that no one involved in creative endeavors like music or film can be completely cynical. Art forces you to dig deeper than your defenses. The process of stripping away is painful, and you have to confront parts of yourself you’re not proud of, but at the same time, embracing that vulnerability leads to a kind of acceptance.
