Isomura happily munches on a Kokko on a bench at the airport. His expression, filled with the deliciousness, is striking. As he starts walking again, tourists and businessmen of all ages and genders appear one after another behind Isomura, and they all follow along, almost like a procession, to the music. A professional side in pursuit of the commercial’s worldview During a break in filming, Isomura sat around the monitor with the director and staff, checking the footage with a serious expression. Using gestures, they enthusiastically exchanged opinions on the movements and expressions for the next scene. As this was a commercial for a famous confectionery
representing his hometown, Shizuoka, the entire staff was even more motivated by his professional attitude, which focused on every detail to express the commercial’s worldview. The “Kokko Motteko♪” commercial music will have you stepping along without even thinking! A charming presence that lightens the mood on set On a set that recreated an airport souvenir shop, as the catchy commercial music “Kokko Motteko” played, Isomura rhythmically swayed to the music, showing off some surreal moves! Even after the call to cut, his playful side continued with his charming steps, filling the set with laughter, and the shoot proceeded in a harmonious atmosphere from start to finish. In the “Kokko Escalator” episode, timing was crucial, and while there were multiple attempts compared to other scenes, Isomura’s “serious face looking straight at the camera” was a hit, although unfortunately it was rejected. The atmosphere on set lightened up, creating a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere. Isomura ate every single Kokko we prepared for the shoot!? We had to shoot more than 10 takes of him eating the product, so we had Isomura eat a lot of Kokko, and he happily ate it, saying “It’s delicious, it’s delicious” every time. Since the “Koko” was prepared specifically for the shoot, I’d like to say, “The rest was enjoyed by the staff!”, but Isomura ate it all with gusto. The choreography for the commercial was done by Lucky Ikeda! The choreography by Lucky Ikeda is simple but features a distinctive walking style, creating the impression of someone arriving bearing a precious gift. The performers struggled to keep their stride in sync with the rhythm, but their inability to keep the rhythm was also interesting and full of character, so the director gave it the OK, and the song was used as is in the commercial. ■Interview with Hayato Isomura

How do you feel about being appointed as the commercial character for “Koko,” a local brand representing Shizuoka? I was very happy. Everyone in Shizuoka Prefecture knows “Koko,” and people outside the prefecture know “Koko” as well. I’ve been watching and eating “Koko” since I was a child, so I’m deeply moved and incredibly happy that I’m now being asked to serve as a commercial character. Q. What are your thoughts on the catchy music used in this commercial? It really does stick in your head. It’s so memorable that the melody sticks in your head after just one listen. It’s simple, rhythmic, and has a great upbeat vibe. The way they say “Koko motteko” (“Koko motteko”) is just as addictive as eating “Koko” and not being able to stop. Koko commercials are truly amazing. I think it’s amazing that Koko has continued to create such catchy, memorable melodies for so many years. My childhood began with that “Koko Koko” commercial, so the fact that it’s still stuck with me today means it must be an amazing melody… I wonder who created it. I would like to spread the word about this commercial. Q. What is the most appealing thing about “Koko,” which you tried again during this shoot? For me, I’ve been eating it since I was a child, so it’s a familiar taste, and now it’s a comforting taste. I think people eating it for the first time will be surprised by how light it is for such a small size. You eat one and you’re like, “Oh, I want another one.” You just can’t stop eating “Koko.” It’s fluffy and has cream inside, and the combination is amazing. When you just want to take a quick breather, you can eat a “Koko” and feel calm. It’s so cute. And of course, the chick has become a trend, a signature, and with its softness and lovely color, I want to love it forever. So cute (laughs). Q. Please tell us about any childhood memories or family stories related to “Koko.” Basically, it was a snack. My mother would often buy “Kokko” at home and put it on the table. When I went to my grandmother’s house, she would say, “Eat some Kokko,” and serve it with tea. “Kokko” has appeared in so many different situations, it feels like it’s always been there for me. I’m not sure if it’s always been there, though (laughs). Also, in the summer, I like to eat it chilled in the refrigerator. In the winter, we had a kotatsu at home, so I’d put a little in there and warm it up a little, which is probably the right thing to do…maybe it’s not the right thing to do, but I think there are so many different ways to enjoy and eat it. Q. Have you ever given “Koko” to a friend or co-star as a souvenir? I actually brought some to the drama set just the other day. I received a lot of “Koko” and shared it with everyone, but surprisingly, quite a few people knew the name but had never tried it, and they came all the way to tell me after trying “Koko” that it was “incredibly delicious.” I was so happy to hear that, and I thought it was something that people really appreciate, and it’s also the perfect size for a gift. It’s individually wrapped, so you can eat one in a blink of an eye in between filming, and it was really popular with the ladies too. You can give it as a souvenir, and I’d like to continue using it as a gift in the future. Q. Please give a message to everyone watching the new “Koko” commercial.
