Akira Sasamoto is known for his work, in which he arranges sculptures and devices of his own design and construction in installation spaces, using them like scores to develop improvisational performances. This exhibition marks his first mid-career retrospective. It looks back on his approximately 20-year career, from his early masterpieces, which humorously intertwine autobiographical narratives and raise profound questions, to his latest works, which incorporate increasingly kinetic elements. Yunoki began his creative career after meeting Muneyoshi Yanagi, the founder of the Japanese Folk Crafts Movement. With vibrant colors and humorous designs, he built a unique world that blended Japanese folklore with modernism. This exhibition looks back on his 75 years of work, spanning genres such as illustrations and collages, and invites you on a journey through Yunoki, focusing on the cities and regions he had connections to. Courtesy Kana Kawanishi Gallery. Hasegawa Kanji, who became a monk at Eiheiji Temple, the head temple of the Soto Zen sect, has now returned to secular life to pursue his creative endeavors. By combining Buddhist philosophy and spirituality with punk rock and beat culture, he has produced sculptures and two-dimensional works that question the concepts and values of familiar culture and society. This will be Hasegawa’s first solo exhibition at the gallery in two years, and will focus on “two distinct senses of time,” a long-standing essential concept of his work, presenting his sculptures as a way to experience time in a multilayered way. “The Clearing” Space Ann (Minami-Aoyama)

This year marks Spacean’s first participation in AWT. Spacean is an arts and culture platform founded in 2024 that focuses on contemporary African art, Japan-Africa relations, and the diaspora. During AWT, curator Eko Eshun will present a group exhibition of contemporary artists from the African diaspora. Focusing primarily on paintings, the exhibition explores the memories and imaginations of the Black community. Participating facilities and exhibition information for each facility can be found on the official website. AWT BAR’s sound program announced! AWT BAR is a pop-up bar in Minami-Aoyama that attracts art fans from Japan and abroad. In a space designed by architect Kazuo Matsuzawa, you can enjoy exclusive food by Shinobu Namae, producer of bricolage bread & co. and executive chef of the three-star Michelin restaurant L’Effervescence, as well as cocktails created in collaboration with three artists. During the event, there will also be art to enjoy with your ears. We’ll introduce you to the bar’s permanent sound installation and the live performances that will be held multiple times throughout the event. At AWT BAR in 2025, Hiroshiro Hino, leader of the rhythm ensemble goat and known for his work with YPY, will create a sonic experience that resonates with the AWT BAR’s “floating space” designed by Kazuo Matsuzawa. Rotating, ultra-directional speakers specially created for this occasion will be installed throughout the bar. The dancers are Mariko Kakizaki and Liel Fiback, both internationally active dancers with years of experience working in dance companies around the world. Composition and sound direction are handled by Koshiro Hino. Their physical expressions, responding to the changing environment of the bar in response to light, wind, and people’s movements, come together to create an experience that can only be experienced in that moment.
