Takarazuka Film Festival: Three Concepts This is a citizen’s film festival that has been held in Takarazuka City, Hyogo Prefecture since 2000. We unearth and screen films made at Takarazuka during the heyday of Japanese cinema in the Showa era, as well as excellent domestic and international films that are rarely seen in theaters. We aim to create a film festival that can be enjoyed by both local residents and film fans. The executive committee is made up of a diverse range of citizens, regardless of age or place of residence. Takarazuka was once the capital of film! Once upon a time, along the Muko River in Takarazuka, stood the Takarazuka Film Productions, a film studio that played a part in the golden age of Japanese cinema. Equipped with two modern studios, an open set, and state-of-the-art facilities, the studio produced 176 feature films (commonly known as “Takarazuka films”) and thousands of television films. Masters such as Akira Kurosawa, Keisuke Kinoshita, and Yasujiro Ozu, as well as silver screen stars such as Hisaya Morishige, Toshiro Mifune, Setsuko Hara, and Yoko Tsukasa, could be seen everywhere around the studio. However, due to the decline of the film industry and a change in Toho’s film production policy, the company withdrew from theatrical film production in 1968. It switched to producing TV and promotional films, but was dissolved due to poor management. In September 1983, Takarazuka Eizo was established. It continued to produce TV dramas and other content, but was dissolved in 2013, bringing an end to its long history. To pass on the memory of the era when Takarazuka was truly the “City of Movies” to future generations, the Takarazuka Film Festival annually plans a special feature on Takarazuka films and unearths and screens them. What local movie theaters can do The venue for the film festival is Takarazuka Cine Pipia, the only movie theater in Takarazuka. This 50-seat theater with two screens is a rare publicly-funded, privately-run cinema in Japan. It was established by Takarazuka City in response to citizen requests as part of the city’s reconstruction plan following the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, which devastated Takarazuka. It opened on October 29, 1999, four years after the disaster, on the fifth floor of the earthquake
reconstruction building “Pipia Mefu.” The Takarazuka Film Festival supports the theater, an important cultural hub for the region, while also exploring and nurturing Takarazuka culture and hosting a hand-crafted film festival with citizen participation. Cine Pipia will celebrate its 26th anniversary on October 29th. 26th Takarazuka Film Festival

Special Feature on Films Made in Takarazuka ◆Takarazuka was the city of movies! Takarazuka Films was established in 1938, before the war. After the war, it relaunched as the Takarazuka Film Productions in 1951. Despite suffering a fire, a modern film studio boasting state-of-the-art facilities and hailed as the best in the Orient opened in April 1956. During the heyday of Japanese cinema, the studios fully utilized their cutting-edge facilities, producing a wide variety of films, from period dramas to musicals, their specialty, human comedy, and literary masterpieces. They played a part in the rapid advance of Japanese cinema and continued to support the golden age of cinema. The town of Takarazuka was home to famous directors such as Yasujiro Ozu, Akira Kurosawa, Mikio Naruse, Keisuke Kinoshita, Senkichi Taniguchi, and Hiroshi Inagaki, as well as legendary movie stars such as Hisaya Morishige, Toshiro Mifune, Kanjuro Arashi, Yuzo Kayama, Chikage Awashima, Michiyo Niiju, Setsuko Hara, Hideko Takamine, Nobuko Otoha, Hibari Misora, Chiemi Eri, and Yoko Tsukasa, and filming took place all over the town, making Takarazuka truly the “City of Movies”! ◆The 26th Takarazuka Film Festival will screen six Takarazuka films produced by the Takarazuka Film Studio, including Autumn at the Kobayakawas (1961), the only film shot at Takarazuka by master director Yasujiro Ozu, and the period drama Daibosatsu Toge (1966), directed by Kihachi Okamoto. The commemorative talk will also touch on TV films produced by Takarazuka Eizo, the studio’s successor company. The 80th anniversary of the end of the war special will feature the classic “The Life of a Outlaw,” starring Sonoi Keiko, a former Takarazuka Revue star who died in the Hiroshima atomic bombing, and the classic animated film “Grave of the Fireflies,” based on the novel by Nosaka Akiyuki. Other events include a “Literary Film Special,” a new film premiere screening of director Shiraha Yahito’s latest work, “Dousa Kitchen,” and a “Special Feature” featuring films related to movie theaters as part of “Aile the Cine Pipia,” as well as talk shows with directors Lim Ka Wai and Oda Kaori, with many guests in attendance. Enjoy the Takarazuka Film Festival. Screened works
