The exhibition will feature artist Moe Shimada’s solo exhibition, “Ghost Note.” ” will be held from Saturday, November 22nd to Tuesday, December 23rd, 2025. Shimada is a young artist who creates oil paintings based on digitally manipulated photographs. He interprets the distortions and noise that appear on the screen as a “new reality,” depicting the tension that arises between digital and oil painting. This exhibition will feature a selection of new works, including large-scale works measuring up to 120cm. A reception will be held prior to the event on Friday, November 21st from 7:30pm to 9:00pm. *All works on display at this exhibition will be new. For more information about the exhibition, click here Exhibition Overview Shimada was born in Tokyo in 1995. He creates oil paintings based on photographs that he has processed and edited using digital devices such as smartphones and tablets. When I was studying art, smartphones became increasingly popular, and taking and editing photos became a daily occurrence. Naturally, I began creating sketches using digital tools. From the beginning, Shimada has felt that painting is an extension of photo editing. He says that the world seen through a smartphone or computer screen can sometimes reveal distortions, noise, light bleeding, and color deviations that cannot be detected with the naked eye. Rather than simply viewing these as technical bugs or errors, I see them as a new reality for the modern age, or a “new real.” I am fascinated by the idea of transferring this accidental visual information into paintings through the physical medium of oil paint. The act of layering filters in image editing is structurally similar to the layering of oil paintings. In both cases, the image emerges through the manipulation of transparency, texture, and depth. Shimada’s works often give the illusion of being photographic. However, when you stand in front of one of his works, the layers of oil paint appear thick, highlighting the discrepancy between vision and matter. This structure, which calls attention to the difference between “seeing” and “being,” is at the core of his work. In recent years, Shimada has been exploring the extent to which he can reproduce the luminous feel and glossy texture of an LCD screen on an analog canvas. By
deliberately employing the classical technique of oil painting, which has a strong physicality, he explores the intersection with the immaterial texture of digital images and the tension that arises between them. Initially, portraits were my main focus, but I’ve recently expanded my motifs to include the Morandi series of vases, flowers, still lifes, and landscapes, pursuing a more compositional and experimental approach. This exhibition will showcase a selection of paintings, primarily new works, including some up to 120cm in size. I hope you will attend.
