Japan Space Design Award Gold Award Logo K.L.V. won the Gold Award in the Entertainment Category of the Japan Space Design Award 2025 The Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025 concluded on October 14th. The exhibit “K.L.V (Kinetic Light Vision)” at the Shiga Prefecture booth at the Kansai Pavilion, which was visited by approximately 400,000 people over the six-month period, has been awarded the Gold Award in the Entertainment Space category of the Japan Kukan Design Award 2025. Following the preliminary results announced on September 18, attention is being drawn once again to the significance of this award as the event draws to a close. “K.L.V.” is a cinematic installation that combines an innovative light art installation created by light artist Takahiro Matsuo (CEO of Lucent Design Inc.) with a video work by Taichi Oka, CEO of Drama Makers Inc. and film director. 450 floating light spheres resonated with the Shiga landscape projected on a curved screen. Enveloped in light and video, visitors enjoyed an immersive experience tracing the memories of “water.” During the exhibition, spontaneous applause broke out after each screening, and many comments were posted on social media, such as “It was like traveling over Lake Biwa” and “The images seemed to breathe.” The images and the space come together as a single work, and the audience becomes part of the experience. This is the core of the evaluation.

Drama Makers Inc. (Representative Director: Taichi Oka) handled the video portion, which made up half of the exhibition, recording and editing Shiga’s nature, culture, and people’s activities around the theme of “water.” Spheres of light float in the space and overlap with the video, allowing visitors to experience the essence of Shiga through sight, sound, and touch. This installation was highly praised for its new exhibition experience, in which the video and space are equally linked, and the essence of the food appears tangible and present before their eyes beyond the video.

The same team also included lighting specialist Asakawa Shu and assistant cinematographers Sano Yuki and Nishibayashi Mae. A separate team also participated in the filming, including photographer Yamazaki Junkei, who has ties to Shiga. The film’s blend of a cinematic quality and a focus on the local area echoed the vision of Matsuo, who designed the entire space, and greatly contributed to the exhibition’s completion. Comment (Video responsible: Oka Taiji) “I am deeply honored to have been able to participate in this project after winning the Gold Award at the Japan Space Design Awards. Meeting Mr. Matsuo, the creator of K.L.V., was a new experience that broadened my creative horizons. What is most gratifying is that our video work resonated with the innovative space created by Lucent Design, led by Mr. Matsuo, to provide visitors with an experience that deeply touched their senses.

The immense lake’s mysterious quality seems like a mirror connecting this world with another. And the lake’s surface, which has continued to shimmer over the ages, conveys the emotion of an eternal story that continues to watch over the history of humanity. I tried and tested many different things to convey that story, bursting into brilliantly colored festivals and fireworks, reaching a climax that takes you to another world, the edge of the lake, the heart-wrenching feeling, and then that sublimation.

I usually focus on creating stories, so my challenge was to apply that ability to create dramatic context to spatial images. I worked hard to create this, and I want to share this joy with everyone involved. I think this experience can be put to good use in directing movies and dramas. I would also like to create images that resonate with something off-screen.

It was handy because it brings out deep colors and allows REDRAW shooting so that accidental details are not missed, and its size makes it possible to shoot all over Shiga, even on a boat rocking on the lake. Combined with the lighting by cinema lighting technician Asakawa Shu, I think it allowed us to express rich colors and light. The images needed to be powerful to compete with K.L.V and to stand up to the huge screen. The Grand Prize winner, KUKAN OF THE YEAR 2025, selected from the five monetary awards, will be announced at the awards ceremony on Friday, November 21st.
