Opening red carpet ceremony held at the Red Brick Government Building on October 10th. Photography: Kyosuke Sakai, Shogo Hirose, Yusuke Kamino “HOKKAIDO” was a multi-event showcasing the charms of Hokkaido’s cuisine and film, held from Friday, October 10th to Sunday, October 12th at the Red Brick Government Building and several movie theaters in Sapporo, Hokkaido. The Hokkaido FOOVIE FESTIVAL 2025 has concluded after its full schedule. A total of 10,000 people from Japan and abroad enjoyed 30 programs over three days, including a grand opening ceremony with a red carpet laid out in the front garden of the Red Brick City Hall, screenings of 20 food-related films, a symposium featuring film industry professionals and chefs, the Sapporo FOOVIE VAL food event featuring 50 restaurants in the city, and collaborative events held simultaneously throughout the city. On the first day, a red carpet ceremony was held at the Red Brick Government Building, featuring distinguished guests including TEAM NACS, the festival’s special supporters, actors Yumi Adachi, Hayato Ichihara, and Ayaka Miyoshi, Hong Kong film legend Johnnie To, producer Takumi Saito, and culinary expert Yoshiharu Doi. They livened up the opening of the festival by responding to cheers from the audience and requests for autographs. This year’s opening film is this fall’s new movie, “Delicious School Lunch: The School Trip of Flames.” Lead actor Ichihara made a surprise appearance at a dinner party featuring a menu recreating the “school lunch” from the film. The entire venue erupted in joy at the sight of “Amarida Yukio” up close. During the talk for the film “Good Morning, Evian!”, which was screened on the 11th, co-star Miyoshi and a customer surprised lead actor Yo Oizumi with a surprise performance to celebrate his 30th anniversary in the entertainment industry. On the 12th, Kobayashi Kaoru from the film “Midnight Diner 2” and Matsushige Yutaka from the film “The Solitary Gourmet” made surprise appearances at each other’s talk shows, creating a variety of dramas and smiles with the surprises that are unique to Hoobiefest. Venues throughout Sapporo featured numerous film screenings, guest appearances, film-related food offerings, and lunch and dinner parties. Other events included the “World Culinary Conference in FOOVIE,” where cutting-edge chefs from Japan and abroad gathered to discuss culinary philosophy and their passion for food, and a symposium where experts from various fields discussed Japanese films and regional film festivals. Through the entertainment of “food and video,” many people learned, connected, and fostered a forum for broader interaction. The closing event on the 12th featured a special talk with Daniel Aguilar from the San Sebastian National Film Festival, with which we have a memorandum of friendship and exchange, as well as the Japan premiere of the film “TETSU, TXISPA, HOSHI.”, which was screened in the Culinary Category at the same festival this year. In her post-screening address, Executive Committee Chair Ayumi Ito said, “We want to continue growing into a film festival that the people of Hokkaido can be proud of. We will strive to make next year’s festival even more enjoyable than last year, this year, and beyond, by combining food and film.” She concluded the three-day event with this determination for next year’s event and gratitude to all those who supported the festival’s purpose. A digest video of the film festival, screened at the end of the closing show, will be released on the official Hubby website and social media. It looks back on the three days of the festival, set to this year’s main theme, created by Sapporo-born music producer Yoshiyuki Tsutaya. Relive Hubby Fest from the comfort of your own home.
