“Calligraphy Performance Koshien” was broadcast live on satonoka on Sunday, July 27th. High school calligraphy clubs from across the country gather together to compete in a national competition showcasing the beauty of their calligraphy and performances. The competition, which began in 2008, is held annually in Shikokuchuo City, Ehime Prefecture. Approximately 20 schools, selected from over 100 schools that qualify for the finals, are given the opportunity to showcase their calligraphy performances. In addition, this year, the 18th tournament, was held with 21 schools, including one special school in commemoration of the Osaka-Kansai Expo. The top five schools from this tournament and Ehime Prefectural Mishima High School, the birthplace of the sport and representative of the host city, participated in the special “Calligraphy Performance Koshien in EXPO” tournament on Thursday, August 21st. The appeal of calligraphy performance was shared with the world from the Osaka-Kansai Expo site. I am truly happy and deeply moved that the “Calligraphy Performance Koshien in EXPO” was held in my hometown of Osaka and was viewed by people from all over the world. I was truly happy and deeply moved that the venue was packed, with standing room only, and the high level of the performers’ performances and skills was truly conveyed. How do you feel about your work with VR? By incorporating VR and AI, the scope of your creativity has expanded dramatically. It’s like being able to create a physical form of what you envision in your head. It’s also increasing interaction with IT and other industries, expanding into the fields of education and research. Calligraphy and VR may seem contradictory at first glance, but by combining them, I experience new possibilities for calligraphy every day. Q. What do you envision for calligraphy in the future and what are your plans for your activities? The current world of calligraphy is full of appeal, but I feel that the participation of younger generations will become even more important in the future.
