Investigation Series,” an alien named Jones from another planet disguises himself as an Earthling who looks just like Hollywood actor Tommy Lee Jones. He moves from one job to another while investigating the unknown planet Earth. In this latest installment, Takako Matsu, Sari Ito, Hana Sugisaki, and Yumi Kawai continue to appear as four alien sisters. Four alien sisters are observing the area around Shibuya Station, which is undergoing a once-in-a-century major construction project, from a UFO. At that moment, the fourth sister, Yumi (Kawai), blurts out, “The inhabitants of this planet always do unnecessary things,” which leads the four sisters to realize that it is precisely because of unnecessary things that new things are constantly being created in the world, and that perhaps the “Craft Boss World Tea” they drink is also the result of an accumulation of unnecessary things. Jones, who had been silently listening to their conversation until then, then realizes that “extraneous things” can also be synonymous with “ideas.” What exactly was the incredibly “extraneous thing” that he did in the middle of Shibuya? Watch the light-hearted banter between the alien Jones and the four sisters, and the unexpected story developments. ■TV Commercial Story “Alien Jones: Four Sisters/Idea” (30 seconds) Four alien sisters are flying over Shibuya in a UFO piloted by Jones. Gazing at the numerous cranes extending from the area around Shibuya Station, which is currently under construction, the fourth sister, Yumi (Kawai), and the eldest sister, Takako (Matsu), are saying, “The inhabitants of this planet always do unnecessary things,” and “This place has been under construction forever…” Hana (Sugisaki), the third sister, praises the workers, saying, “But it looks like a lot of work…” Landing on the rooftop of Shibuya Scramble Square, the second daughter, Sairi (played by Ito), emerges from the UFO and says, “I heard that tower was met with mixed reviews when it was completed,” as she looks off into the distance. For a moment, the surroundings of Tokyo Tower change to the scene it was when it was first completed. The third daughters, Hana and Takako, comment, “Maybe it was a little sudden,” and “It’d be lonely without it now,” as they all sip Craft Boss World Tea. Jones, listening to their conversation, seems to have had a sudden inspiration. Yuumi says, “Come to think of it, Secatee (the world’s tea) does a lot of unnecessary things, too,” and Takako and Sairi explain the modifications they’ve made to the Secatee they’re drinking, saying things like, “We’ve tried adding oolong tea to black tea,” and “We’ve even added peach and mango.” Hana then blurts out something that sounds like the truth: “So that’s what we call an idea.” When an exclamation mark appears above Hana’s head, the other three also suddenly remember something and three exclamation marks appear above their heads. Looking down from the rooftop, Yuumi exclaims in amazement, “Hey, old man, you’re building something amazing!” In front of her, Jones, hanging from a stone structure, waves, “Heyyy!” Jones’s idea of building a giant dog tower atop the scramble intersection is unimpressed, but Sairi and Hana are unconvinced, saying, “A Shibuya tower?” and “That’s a bit much.” However, Takako doesn’t seem completely opposed, praising Jones with a big smile, saying, “That’s a great idea!” ■Filming episodes ◇The four alien sisters expressed their joy upon being reunited The four alien sisters reunited for the first time in about six months since their last shoot. As soon as they met, happy voices rang out, and a harmonious atmosphere quickly filled the set. Then, during the storyboard explanation, the director revealed, “The silver accessories you’re all wearing are actually proof that you’re aliens.” They nodded in surprise and said, “Oh,” and Matsu and Ito showed each other their rings, Sugisaki their glasses, and Kawai their bracelets, and smiles naturally spread across their faces. ◇They had a great time chatting privately, talking about pets they recently got. Ito, Sugisaki, and Kawai take a break, sipping Craft Boss World Tea, while looking down on the streets of Shibuya. During the break, the three of them shared a laid-back atmosphere, just like in their TV commercials, as the conversation turned to the pet Ito recently got. Kawai smiled and exclaimed, “So cute!” and “It’s a very small dog,” as she looked at a photo saved on her smartphone. Sugisaki joined in, and the
conversation became lively like a girls’ night out. ◇ Matsu
unexpectedly failed a literal physical action move!? In this scene, Matsu exclaims, “What a great idea!” after seeing a giant dog tower built at Shibuya’s Scramble Crossing. The director instructed Matsu to “nudge Jones, who’s beside me, with your elbow,” to which he grinned and replied, “Oh, I’m looking forward to it (laughs).” As the camera started rolling, Matsu leaned forward, throwing his entire body forward, delivering a powerful performance. The director then suggested, “Shall we try a gentle shoulder tap?” Jones stumbled with too much force, and Matsu scrambled to help him. Perhaps because he was so nervous, even his voice cracked when he immediately said, “What a great idea!” The resulting performance resembled a comedy skit, and at the moment of the cut, the cast and crew erupted in laughter. ◇Jones brings out the best in the four sisters while also making her own presence known Before filming began, Jones carefully discussed with the director the relationship and distance between the alien Jones and the four sisters, which had changed since the previous film. Having a firm understanding of the director’s intent for each scene, Jones proactively offered his own ideas before the director even gave any instructions, such as, “Shall we try a pattern where we react a little faster next time?” or “Maybe we could try using a CG
exclamation mark in this scene?” And when the director asked for variation in his acting, Jones replied, “Of course! Let’s hurry up and start filming!” and stood ready in front of the camera with a light step.
