Kumejima Nohgaku Performance” will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at the Gushikawa Rural Environment Improvement Center (730 Nakadomari, Kumejima-cho, Shimajiri-gun, Okinawa Prefecture). With a history spanning approximately 700 years, it is also known as the world’s oldest surviving performing art. Noh is deeply connected to Kumiodori, and Tamagusuku Chokun (the founder of Kumiodori) drew inspiration from performing arts such as Noh to create Kumiodori that incorporates the history and folklore of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Performance/Synopsis [Program] Kyogen play “Obagasake” (Obagasake) – Shite: Okura Yataro and others Noh play “Funabenkei” (Funabenkei) – Shite: Yamai Tsunao and others [Synopsis] “My Aunt’s Sake” A nephew who loves alcohol often goes to his aunt, who runs a liquor store, to ask for alcohol, but is always refused. The nephew then tells his aunt about the rumor about the demon, and then disguises himself as a demon to visit her in an attempt to get some alcohol… Watch as he tries to get some alcohol. “Funabenkei” After falling out with his brother, Minamoto no Yoritomo, Yoshitsune decides to flee the capital and heads for Omono Bay with Benkei and his entourage. After a reluctant farewell from Shizuka Gozen, they set sail, but the weather suddenly changes, and the ghost of Taira no Tomomori appears along with violent, rough waves. However, Benkei’s heartfelt prayers drive the ghost away. This popular play features famous historical figures such as Minamoto no Yoshitsune, Benkei, Shizuka Gozen, and Taira no Tomomori. The first half features Shizuka Gozen’s dance, expressing her grief over Yoshitsune’s departure.
