In 1943, British clergyman Wilbert Awdry told a story about a locomotive to his son Christopher, who was bedridden with measles. This became the origin of “Thomas the Tank Engine.” The story was eventually published as a book, and “The Railway Series,” published in 1945, became a bestseller. From then on, Reverend Awdry produced many works over the next 27 years, until 1972.
