[Gakuji Publishing Co., Ltd.] The first book guide written by a school librarian, “From School Librarian Michineko! A Book Guide for Middle and High School Students,” has been published!
Gakuji Publishing Co., Ltd. Press release: October 23, 2025 To Members of the Press The first book guide written by a school librarian, “From School Librarian Michineko! A Book Guide for Junior and Senior High School Students,” has been published! A conversation with Kengo, a novel review influencer who enjoys immense support among young people! Gakuji Publishing Co., Ltd. has published “From School Librarian Michineko! A Book Guide for Junior and Senior High School Students.” This book is a heavily expanded version of the book reviews that Office Michineko representative Kinoshita Michiko, who served as a school librarian at a Saitama prefectural high school for 40 years and is the author of the Iwanami Junior Shinsho book “Ignite Your Heart’s Desire to Read!”, has carefully selected and recommended books for junior and senior high school students from her magazine reviews. The book also includes a conversation with novel recommendation influencer Kengo at the end of the book! We spoke extensively with the two about their book-related stories, including Kengo’s first encounter with books and the titles he is currently interested in. This book is recommended not only for book lovers, but also for students who say, “I’m not good with books” or “I hate books,” as well as adults who want to recommend books to junior and senior high school students but don’t know what kind of books to recommend.

■The school librarian has selected approximately 80 books to help teens with their concerns! The National School Library Council conducts an annual survey on the reading habits of elementary, junior high, and high school students nationwide. The latest results, the “69th School Reading Survey Report,” show that in response to the question, “How many books did you read in May?”, elementary school students read a record high of 13.8 books in 2024. Meanwhile, junior high school students read 4.1 books (5.5 books last time) and high school students read 1.7 books (1.9 books last time), showing a downward trend. This suggests that children, especially junior high and high school students, are increasingly turning away from reading. This book was created with the author’s hope that people who aren’t good at reading will read it. It is divided into 12 chapters focused on teenage anxieties and worries, such as “Books to Protect Yourself,” “Confronting Social Anxiety,” and “Living Alone.” It introduces 80 books that will help middle and high school students and serve as their first step into reading. At the beginning of each chapter, an introduction reads, “This book is recommended for situations like this,” listing the books in the chapter like a sommelier. You can read the explanation before reading the introduction to each book. We hope that this will be of some help to teacher librarians and school librarians when selecting books. ■Message from the author In my work as a school librarian, I’ve come across many different books and introduced them to students. This book contains a collection of books that are easy to read even for middle and high school students who aren’t fond of books. I hope you too will become friends with books! ――Michiko Kinoshita ■Books Featured in This Book (Partial Listing) The author, who has worked as a school librarian for 40 years, connecting students with books, has introduced recommended books for 12 themes that address the concerns of middle and high school students. This diverse book guide includes plenty of novels to reach students who aren’t good at reading, as well as books on living alone and current events.
