Even when I get so obsessed with raising my children that I fall into self-loathing Early education boom in the field of education As the trend toward “early education” continues, more families are exposing their children to English and math from an early age, and “how to get ahead in learning” is becoming a central concern. Amid this “additive” education trend, photographer Nobuko Tabe, author of this book, led her twins to Kyoto University by deliberately “drawing out” rather than “adding” to their children. Tabe began by “seeing children as they are,” carefully observing their interests and concerns and linking them to experiences. The
concentration they developed from immersing themselves in what they loved and the sense of security they felt from being accepted for who they were eventually fostered the ability to take on challenges, and as a result, both twins were able to enter Kyoto University. However, the road to success was by no means smooth. The difference in their academic scores was 10 points when they took the junior high school entrance exams. Even if you raise identical twins in the same way, they will develop at different rates. When there was a 10-point difference in their academic ability scores before their junior high school entrance exams, Tabe decided not to rush to improve their grades, but to create an environment that suited each child’s abilities and personality. “Rather than pushing my child according to my ideals as a parent, I observe and support them as they are now.” He says that the core of this approach was the “power of observation” he developed as a photographer. Features of this book What is a “cameraman’s perspective”? A photographer is not only a professional at “taking pictures,” but also a professional at “seeing.” A camera can only capture what is in front of it. That’s why photographers accept their subjects as they are and seek ways to bring out their charm. Isn’t it the same with raising children? This book introduces seven ways that Tabe has used the “cameraman’s perspective” in her child-rearing. For example, • Not “enjoy” but “be entertained” • Don’t praise, convey your emotions. • Looking at close-ups and long shots etc. She talks specifically about how she applied the “power of observation” she developed through filming to her own child-rearing.

In other words, instead of thinking “from the outside to the child,” try directing your thoughts “from the child to the outside.” Tabe says that when she changed her perspective, she was able to relax and find her own way of raising children. Now, as early education becomes more prevalent, is it time to reconsider how you raise your children?

Parental Insights and Sympathy – I found many words I could relate to, such as “trust your child and wait” and “enjoy the experience together,” and reading them was encouraging. – The photographer’s unique perspective on “observational parenting” gave me new insights.
