Momoko Gill is a producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. Her latest collaboration with cult electronic musician Matthew Herbert, “Clay,” garnered critical acclaim from outlets like The Observer, The Wire, and MOJO. Now, Momoko is releasing her first solo album. Self-taught, Momoko is a multifaceted musician, drummer, producer, songwriter, and vocalist, having built a career in the UK
electronic/jazz scene. Her unique worldview is expressed through collaborations with Alabaster DePlume, Matthew Herbert, Coby Sey, Tirzah, and Nadeem Din-Gabisi (of the collaborative duo An Alien Called Harmony), and her hands-on experience on numerous tours is strongly reflected in her songwriting and production. The 11-track album “Momoko” was produced by Momoko Gill and recorded at Total Refreshment Centre. It was mixed by Matthew Herbert and mastered by Alex Gordon at Abbey Road Studios.

Based in London, the album’s 11 tracks incorporate her background growing up in Japan and the United States into meticulous composition and narrative, while firmly imbuing her current, evolving voice. The lead single “No Others” features harmonic vocals layered over a danceable, bass-driven arrangement, offering a glimpse into her cultivated jazz background. The harmonic, melancholic “Heavy” contrasts with the darker “Shadowboxing,” while “Test A Small Area” gradually develops into an experimental
instrumental beat with a sense of unease. Momoko’s uncompromising vision is clearly expressed on the intimate and poetic “When Palestine Is Free,” featuring Shabaka Hutchings, Soweto Kinch, Alabaster DePlume, Rozi Plain, Coby Sey, Marysia Osu, Matthew Herbert, and a choir of approximately 50 people. Momoko then says: “Now, more than ever, we feel we are part of a vast, breathing mycelium resisting enormous forces that threaten life itself. Colonial violence, racism, and oppression are ubiquitous, and we feel a renewed sense of urgency to fight them wherever we encounter them.” Starting November 1st, Momoko will embark on the “Herbert & Momoko Japan Tour 2025,” visiting six locations across Japan to promote her latest collaboration with Matthew Herbert, “Clay.”
