On November 2nd in Fukuoka, Yuko Tanaka and Mitsuharu Fukumoto will talk about “Godoku,” a discussion of local culture through books, and the “1,000 Book Navi” collection of books related to Kyushu will go on sale. Tokyo’s first reading festival, featuring a book market, book parties, and book games, will be held in the Seigo Matsuoka Library Space, which houses 60,000 books. This reading festival goes beyond just reading books; it opens up new possibilities for books. Isis Editing School will be holding two major events in November in Fukuoka and Tokyo that book lovers won’t want to miss. This is a festival of “kyodoku” (local reading) and “extensive reading” that utilizes the reading techniques of school principal and editorial engineer Seigo Matsuoka. In Fukuoka, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Kyushu Branch, which has worked with Seigo Matsuoka, a talk event and BookNavi book launch event featuring 1,000 books will be held on Sunday, November 2nd, on the theme of “kyodoku,” which explores local culture through books. The first book festival, “Betsudensai,” will be held at Gotokuji Temple in Tokyo over two days, November 23rd and 24th (Sunday and Monday, national holidays), at Seigo Matsuoka’s library space, “Honro.” This innovative book event, themed around “extensive reading,” sets itself apart from Comiket and book fairs. Seigo Matsuoka himself is a writer and editor who has written the magnificent book guide “A Thousand Nights and a Thousand Books” and has published many books, so at Isis Editing School, there is a deep-rooted culture of using books for learning in various ways. In November 2025, a new “Book Festival” will be held for the first time in Fukuoka and Tokyo. In Kyushu, on November 2nd, the Isis Editing School Kyushu Branch celebrated its 20th anniversary. The President of the School visited Fukuoka. Yuko Tanaka will be visiting the event and will hold a live talk with Mitsuharu Fukumoto of local publisher Sekifusha and Yukimasa Nakano, head of the Kyushu branch of the Qten Genki-gumi. In addition, to commemorate the 20th anniversary, a book titled “Qten Genki Book 9” will be published (B5 size/256 pages total), named after “Kyushu’s Thousand Nights and Thousand Books.” This book navigation contains information on 1,000 books, compiled using the “Thirty-Three Books Shop” method, which creates groups of 33 books for each key book selected from Seigo Matsuoka’s Thousand Nights and Thousand Books. Sales will begin at the venue on the day. The event’s main title is “Understanding Kyushu through Thousand Nights and Thousand Books: Promoting Local Reading to Revitalize the Region.” This event explores the local area through books. It will be held as a participating event in “Bookoka,” winner of the 47th Suntory Regional Culture Award. In addition, a new book festival, “Betsudensai,” will be held on November 23rd and 24th at the Isis Editing School’s book salon space, Honro (Gotokuji, Tokyo). It will be hosted by the Extensive Reading Allegoria club, which began in December 2024 and develops a variety of book-themed activities. With books at its core, 16 clubs will exhibit and hold talk events with themes such as medicine, kimono, music, photography, and end-of-life planning, as well as regional specialties from Kamakura, Karuizawa, Okinawa, and more. There will also be a secondhand book fair hosted by an editor from the legendary Matsumaru Honpo Bookshop. The entire Gotokuji ISIS building will be used for lucky bags, a book consultation corner, and permanent book-related exhibits. The event will feature a variety of events that set it apart from previous book fairs and Comiket events, including the popular podcast Honren, live streams from the Okake Sen Ya Sen Sho fan club, a talk by Tanaka Yuko on Edo and books, a talk by media aesthetician Takemura Mitsuhiro, and a session on games and medicine between game creator Yonemitsu Kazunari and Juntendo University pathologist Ogura Kanako. This festival, which celebrates “Ten” (典), meaning “book,” and has an auspicious sound similar to that of Benten, will be held for two days only to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of Principal Seigo Matsuoka and the first anniversary of the book club “Extensive Reading Allegoria. This is the first book event to explore new possibilities for books, setting itself apart from Comiket and book fairs. “Extensive Reading Allegoria” is a new project advocated by Isis Editing School that deepens learning through diverse reading methods (extensive reading) and club culture. Rather than simply reading a lot, we aim to create “different value” through reading by incorporating various reading methods and combining shared reading, output, and practical activities. [About Isis Editing School] On June 1, 2000, Isis Editing School opened online as “the world’s only school of methods.” It will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2024. Its distinctive feature is its learning method, which is completely different from existing online learning methods that involve studying automatically delivered content. In an online “classroom,” participants learn through peer study with around 10 other students of different ages and occupations. They answer “topics” posed by a “deputy instructor” and receive guidance, drawing out their own editing abilities through a unique learning style. Participants range in age from teenagers to those in their 80s, living and working all over Japan and the world.
