Installation view: Chiharu Shiota: The Soul Trembles, MAO Museo d’Arte Orientale, Torino, 2025 ALCANTARA(R), the Italian material brand, is pleased to partner with and support the large-scale solo exhibition “Chiharu Shiota: The Soul Trembles” by internationally acclaimed Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota. Chiharu Shiota is known for her performances and installations that express intangible elements such as memory, anxiety, dreams, and silence. While drawing from personal experiences, her work has attracted a wide range of audiences around the world by questioning universal concepts such as identity, boundaries, and existence. Her signature series is a dynamic installation in which black and red threads are strung across the entire space. “Chiharu Shiota: The Soul Trembles,” a large-scale solo exhibition of her work, will be held at the Museo d’Arte Orientale (MAO), Turin, from October 22, 2025 to June 28, 2026. This exhibition, which debuted in 2019 at the Mori Art Museum as “Shiota Chiharu: The Soul Trembles,” has since traveled to leading museums around the world, including Busan Museum of Art (South Korea), Yong Art Museum (Shanghai), Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane (Australia), and the Grand Palais (Paris). This marks the first time the exhibition has been held in Italy, and it also marks Shiota Chiharu’s first solo exhibition at a museum specializing in Oriental art. The exhibition at MAO was co-curated by Mori Art Museum Director Mami Kataoka and MAO Director Davide Quadrio, with Anna Musini and Francesca Filicetti serving as curatorial assistants. The exhibition will span the entire MAO, including the permanent collection galleries, and will include drawings, sculptures, photography, installations, as well as site-specific works created specifically for this exhibition. In addition, black thread made from ALCANTARA® is used as an important element in works on display this time, such as “In Silence” (2002/2019) and “Reflections of Space-Time” (2018), and its unique texture and presence add depth to Chiharu Shiota’s world of expression.
