Currently residing in Berlin. Confronting the fundamental human issues of life and death, exploring “what it means to live” and “what it means to exist,” he creates works using a variety of techniques, including sculpture, photography, and video, primarily in large-scale installations that weave together the absent presence of memories residing in places and objects. In 2008, he received the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Art Encouragement Prize for New Artists. In 2015, he was selected to represent Japan at the 56th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition. In 2019, he held his largest solo exhibition to date, “The Soul Trembles,” at the Mori Art Museum. In 2020, he received the 61st Mainichi Art Award. Kataoka Mami Kataoka Mami Has been at the Mori Art Museum since 2003 and in his current position since 2020. He will also serve as Director of the National Art Research Center from April 2023. He was International Curator at the Hayward Gallery (London) (2007-2009), Co-Artistic Director of the 9th Gwangju Biennale (2012), Artistic Director of the 21st Biennale of Sydney (2018), and Artistic Director of the Aichi 2022 International Art Festival (2022). He served as a director of CIMAM (International Council of Museums and Art Museums) from 2014 to 2022 (and as chairman from 2020 to 2022).
