Despite the early hour, Nishimura is excited to see one of only two turntables on the section. “The reason why the turntable is so great is a long story, but…” As always, the opening was a machine gun of talk. Tomochika and Reiji in the studio were already a little overwhelmed. The traditional summer beer train, enjoyed in a vintage carriage. This year, it seems to be a little different… “I heard that this year, that guy will be pulling the beer train. I want to see it, ride it, and drink some,” said Nishimura. The Blue Train was a sleeper express train that was hugely popular in the 1970s. It was sadly retired in 2015, but has since returned to the Oigawa Railway. It now operates as an event train, and this year it will make its debut as a beer train. Reiji, on the other hand, says he’s only ridden the Blue Train once. He shares fond childhood memories. Before enjoying the beer train, let’s take a train trip to enjoy the Oigawa Railway itself. With the majestic Oigawa River, the beautiful, simple green scenery from the window, and the historic station building, Tomochika commented, “It would make a great setting for a drama.” ■Reiji also has deep memories… of the Blue Train Nishimura walks along the platform before departure. He immediately seems to be interested in the damper section underneath the carriage… Nishimura sighs, sensing the romance woven through history, and Reiji immediately interjects, “We’re talking about dampers at 8am, aren’t we?” On the way, they serve the famous ekiben, but Nishimura suddenly stops eating it. What is the reason for his strong preference? At Senzu Station, they visit the Steam Locomotive Museum. He says that he has actually been here before with his beloved son, and openly confesses the bitter memories he had of that time. His heartbreak is so great that Tomochika has to offer a word of comfort… Due to the typhoon in 2010, some sections of the line were closed, so we decided to travel by bus. Nishimura is always fascinated by the mechanical parts of both trains and buses. As soon as the bus arrived, he began explaining how high-tech it was. Being able to see the tea fields from inside the bus is a unique pleasure in Shizuoka. But even here, Nishimura showed off his mechanical knowledge. I changed to the Ikawa Line, which continued up the mountain. I tried to take some train photos from the suspension bridge, but it was a complete failure. I thought to myself, “I guess I’m just not good at train photography,” and dejectedly said… For steep sections, we use the Abt system train, which uses huge gears to support the train as it climbs. Coupling trains, making announcements on board, and safety checks… Nishimura even gives a deep bow to the overly busy conductor. In the second part, we finally board the beer train! Nishimura has been excited since early morning, but will he be able to keep up his energy?
