The vision is one of the largest LED visions in Japan, with a dual screen measuring 24 meters on the south side and 12 meters on the north side, installed on both sides of the station corridor where more than 400,000 people pass by daily. The theme of the video is “Night Parade of One Hundred Demons.” Set in the streets of Kawasaki, it depicts a parade of various creatures, including the baby thunder beast Roul, as they each find something precious. Taking advantage of the ultra-wide screens on both sides of the station corridor, the video harmonizes with the station scenery by linking the characters running through the video with the people passing by, creating a video that offers new discoveries with every viewing. This video was produced by a group of alumni from the Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School of Film and New Media, Animation, and directed by Wataru Uekusa, an animation artist from the university. As the first project since the launch of “GREEN OCEAN,” the project explores unprecedented new forms of visual expression, including effect animations unique to the large, horizontal screen, which differs from standard display sizes, and the use of different images on both sides of the corridor to enhance the entire space. <Profile of Wataru Uekusa> Illustrator/animator, born in Chiba Prefecture in 1987. After graduating from Tokyo Polytechnic University, he completed his studies in animation at the Graduate School of Film and New Media at Tokyo University of the Arts. Aiming to create works that people will want to watch over and over, he is active in a wide range of fields, including music videos, promotional videos, character design, and CD jacket illustrations. Recent activities include the music video for Hatsuhoshi Gakuen’s “Kekei,” the NHK Minna no Uta song “Kimi no Tonari ni Itai Kara,” and the music video for Natori Sana’s “Mondai Night Ripper!” <About the Kawasaki Brave Thunders and Rawl> The Kawasaki Brave Thunders are a professional basketball club in the B.LEAGUE. Based in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, the club is operated by DeNA Kawasaki Brave Thunders Co., Ltd. DeNA took over the club from Toshiba in 2018, and since its founding in 1950, the team has become a venerable club boasting four league championships and five Emperor’s Cup victories. “Roll” is the mascot for the Kawasaki Brave Thunders. He’s a baby thunder beast that fell from the sky to Kawasaki, and his name comes from the English word “roar,” which means “thunder rumbling.” He’s won the “B.LEAGUE MASCOT OF THE YEAR” three times in the last four seasons, and is beloved as one of the B.LEAGUE’s most mischievous and adorable mascots. ■Comments from those involved in the establishment of the label Toei Animation Director Atsushi Suzuki We launched this label with the aim of creating an environment (space) where creators can meet through “GREEN OCEAN,” where new creative ideas can be born from those encounters, where fans who are attracted to that creative idea and support it can gather, and where companies and organizations can step up to help. We will be launching various projects in the future. We sincerely look forward to the participation of creators, as well as all those who support and cooperate with us. DeNA> Shota Tanaka, General Manager, Business Management Department, Entertainment Development Business Division News about the booming content industry and fascinating works by creators are making waves in various media outlets every day. Discussions about the content industry as a national strategy are also accelerating. At the same time, it’s precisely because of these current circumstances that we’ve once again been discussing with Toei Animation and Tokyo University of the Arts what we can and should do together with creators. We are pleased to have been able to announce this in the form of “GREEN OCEAN.” We hope to create unprecedented opportunities and connections, and to take further action with the creators and companies who support and cooperate with us. Mitsuko Okamoto, Professor, Department of Animation, Graduate School of Film and New Media, Tokyo University of the Arts We wanted to create a space that would allow creators to express their free imagination, just like the “green sea” depicted in “Animal Treasure Island” by Yoichi Kotabe, a graduate of our university and former animation director at Toei Animation. This is the desire that brought these three parties together. I’m the one most excited about what we can achieve. ■About the creators’ label “GREEN OCEAN” This creators’ label was established as a joint venture between Toei Animation, DeNA, and the Planning and Development Laboratory of the Department of Animation, Graduate School of Film and New Media, Tokyo University of the Arts, with the aim of supporting and nurturing creators. Toei Animation and DeNA will be central in planning and marketing the project, and a network of creators, primarily consisting of students and alumni of the Department of Animation, Graduate School of Film and New Media, Tokyo University of the Arts, will produce a variety of content, including animation. In addition to providing fair production costs, we also provide training opportunities, such as participation and guidance from professional creators. We will also collaborate with government agencies and other companies to
continuously develop projects that contribute to the development of the animation industry and cultural promotion.
