Sugamo Jizo Street Shopping District Promotion Association Press Release: October 27, 2025 Reviving the atmosphere of Edo in Sugamo: The Sugamo Nakasendo Chrysanthemum Festival, an autumn event, begins November 6th. Chrysanthemums are on display in the grounds of Shinshoji Temple and at Taisho University’s Sugamo Kamodai Kannon Hall. Sugamo chrysanthemums were beloved by the common people from the Edo period through the early Meiji period. Sugamo Jizo Street was once the Nakasendo road, and the road was also the birthplace of horticulture, with many gardeners making their homes along the route. The event began in 1993 to preserve this history for future generations, and this year marks its 33rd anniversary. Various chrysanthemums, lovingly cultivated within the grounds of Edo Rokujizoson Shinshoji Temple and Taisho University’s Sugamo Kamodai Kannon Hall, will be on display. Please come and visit. Chrysanthemum Festival, various chrysanthemum arrangements, including three-stem, hanging, bonsai, and thousand-flower arrangements, are displayed, allowing you to enjoy the chrysanthemums of Sugamo, the birthplace of horticulture, in a nostalgic atmosphere. Each year, the theme changes: “Shaped” arrangements. This year’s theme is “Sugamon,” the official mascot character of Sugamo Jizo-dori Shopping Street. Preparations for the event are being made in cooperation with the local shopping district, community members, Sugamo Shinkin Bank staff, Taisho University, and others, making it a town-wide, hand-crafted event. Take this opportunity to explore Sugamo and enjoy the gorgeous autumn scenery. On the first day only, there will be a matcha tea ceremony provided by the Taisho University Tea Ceremony Club (numbers are limited). There will also be chrysanthemum displays at Sugamo Otori Shrine, Sugamo Station South Exit Square, Sugamo Regional Cultural Creation Center Matsumu, Sugamo Sarutahiko Ojin Koshindo, and along the Nakasendo road. Kikumi Chaya will be open for seven days from November 6th to 12th. It was built in the image of the teahouses that provided comfort along the old Nakasendo road during the Edo and Meiji periods. Under a bamboo shed, you can enjoy famous products from Sugamo Jizo-dori Shopping Street, such as rice dumplings (Okano Eisen), warabimochi (bracken mochi) (Motoko), amazake (sweet sake) (Shogetsudo), and green tea
