Tokyo Tatemono Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director, President and CEO: Hitoshi Nomura; hereinafter “Tokyo Tatemono”), F. Kogei Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Koshigaya City, Saitama Prefecture; Representative Director, President and CEO: Katsumi Nunokawa; hereinafter “NOXGALLERY”), which operates the digital art gallery “NOXGALLERY,” and New York-based Superchief Gallery
(hereinafter “Superchief Gallery”), are pleased to announce that the immersive art event “Art Golden Gai by NoxGallery x Superchief x Brillia” (hereinafter “Art Golden Gai”), co-hosted by the company, has been awarded the GOOD DESIGN AWARD 2025. “Art Golden Gai” is a large-scale art project that took place in January 2025, utilizing the entire Saison Daikanyama Building in Ebisu West, Shibuya Ward, Tokyo, and attracted a record 7,000 visitors over a total of 20 days. Approximately 70 artists from Japan and abroad came together in a dilapidated space that was scheduled for demolition, creatively decorating all 50 rooms and common areas of the building, bringing new color and vitality to a previously quiet area. This award signifies that the project was recognized for its excellent design in the “Community Building Initiatives and Activities (Category 19-02)” category. ■Judges’ Comments (from the GOOD DESIGN AWARD 2025 Evaluation) The following are the judges’ comments, as posted on the official Good Design Award website: “With the increasing number of demolition projects during the renewal of high-growth era stock, and the growing gaps in the buildings waiting for demolition, such as hollowing out and public safety insecurity, this attractive temporary use initiative leverages the developer’s position. By opening up an entire building in Kaitaimachi to the community, the empty space is returned to the community, creating value for the empty space with a large scale and impact. The project is also responsible for securing neighborhood agreements and safety management, demonstrating an operational model that allows for the use of temporary fencing and expansion to other properties. We hope this will not end as a one-time event, but will become a continuing and expanding series of
initiatives.” ■Background to the event and the birth of “Art Golden Gai” Saison Daikanyama, a 10-story rental apartment building (completed in 1986) located midway between Shibuya, Ebisu, and Daikanyama, was scheduled for demolition in February 2025 due to its aging. Large-scale buildings often require time between the decision on a reconstruction plan and the actual start of demolition. During this time, the building becomes hollow, leading to a loss of vitality in the surrounding area and a deterioration in public safety, which can become local issues. Therefore, NOXGALLERY and Tokyo Tatemono planned an art event using the building as a temporary measure to give back to the community during the hiatus until demolition. This effort to meaningfully utilize the building’s final days, as a sort of “end-of-life preparation,” led to the “Art Golden Gai” art event. The event’s name, “Art Golden Gai,” comes from Shinjuku Golden Gai, a cultural district known for its gatherings of creative individuals, including artists, writers, and film directors. Each of the 50 small rooms has become a unique space for expression, and the diverse subcultures and arts that throng the space are reminiscent of Shinjuku’s Golden Gai, a deep and stimulating cultural cluster. Taking advantage of the fact that there is no obligation to restore the building to its original state before demolition, bold painting on the walls and installations using entire rooms have been made possible, and the entire building has been reborn as an experimental art space. This challenging attempt to create value in a “gap in time” has attracted a lot of attention as a way to revitalize the local area.
