This science fiction work, first serialized in issue 5 of the “Young Magazine Pirate Edition,” a supplement to the young men’s magazine “Young Magazine,” by manga artist Masamune Shirow in 1989, features Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg with exceptional abilities in cyberwarfare and combat. The story follows the offensive unit “Ghost in the Shell,” led by her, who holds the rank of “Major,” as they confront increasingly sophisticated and violent crimes. With realistic and detailed drawings, the series explores cyberpunk elements and philosophical themes, deeply exploring the fusion of humanity and technology, personal identity, and other topics, influencing many creators. Since then, the animated feature film “Ghost in the Shell” was directed by Mamoru Oshii in 1995, the animated TV series “Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex” was directed by Kenji Kamiyama in 2002, the animated feature film “Ghost in the Shell: Arise” was directed by Kazuya Kise in 2013, the Hollywood live-action film “Ghost in the Shell” was released in 2017, and the streaming anime “Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045” was co-directed by Kenji Kamiyama and Shinji Aramaki in 2020. And in 2026, the new TV anime “Ghost in the Shell: The Ghost in the Shell” is scheduled to air, with director Moko-chan, series composition and scriptwriting by Toh Enjoe, character design and chief animation director by Shuhei Handa, and animation produced by Science SARU. “Ghost in the Shell” has been adapted into various forms, including animated feature films, television animation, and games, each of which has its own unique story, interpretation, and expression that differs from the manga.
