art cruise gallery by Baycrew’s (hereinafter “art cruise gallery”), operated by Baycrew’s Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; Chairman and CEO: Shigeru Sugimura), will be holding its 10th exhibition, Hidetoshi Muramatsu’s solo exhibition “Return to Stone” (hereinafter “this exhibition”), from Friday, November 21, 2025. Since his graduate school days, Muramatsu has been creating works that explore the theme of “the presence that resides in objects.” By petrifying objects that bear traces of time or that show signs of someone having used them, he extends the life of fading memories and relationships into the future. He discovers a new form of existence through the combination of the eternal time of the material known as stone and the fleeting time of tools created by humans. The starting point for my work comes from chance encounters at antique shops or the intuition that “it’s time to turn it into stone” that comes over me as I spend time with the pieces. Only motifs that the artist himself felt he wanted to preserve in stone were selected, including bikes, skateboards, guitars, and headphones. Subjects connected to the artist’s memories and aspirations are transformed into sculptures. Underlying these works is a renewed focus on the relationship between objects and people. The title “Return to Stone” embodies the artist’s belief that “everything originates in stone.” The iron and glass we create are born from ore and eventually return to stone. These works visualize this cycle, reflecting the flow of time across the past, present, and future, quietly asking the viewer, “What is existence?”
