Approximately 90% of manga editors are assigned to aspiring manga artists, and approximately half have had their works serialized or published as one-shots. Celsys has released a report on the 8th Mochicomi Online event, an online event where aspiring manga artists can submit their manga to editorial departments. Approximately 86% of manga editors have met promising aspiring artists at past events and built relationships with them as their assigned editors. Furthermore, approximately half of these encounters have led to the serialization or publication of a one-shot manga. The eighth event was attended by 178 editors from 78 editorial departments and organizations. In a survey conducted after the event, over 80% of both manga editors and those wishing to submit their own work rated themselves highly, with over 80% rating them as “very satisfied” or “somewhat satisfied.” Manga editors were also surveyed about their interactions with artists after meetings and their track record.

◆Survey Results for Those Who Want to Bring Their Own Work ■Results Obtained with MochiComi Online (by Manga Genre) • Preferring a shounen genre – They encouraged me to take on the challenge of storyboarding. They also gave me the advice I needed to do so. (20s) – I was assigned a representative, and we set up a meeting later. (20s) • Preferring young adult genre – I was reminded of my level. It was a very good result. (Teenager) – Thankfully, I received many requests to collaborate with me on serialization and one-shot publication, and while I was determining my future direction, I was able to meet several people who wanted to work with me. (30s) • Preferring shojo genre – I was able to identify the strengths and areas for improvement in my work. (30s) – While I was looking for work on comic book adaptations, I was able to successfully find an editor, and things seem to be moving forward positively. Also, thanks to the efforts of the editor I was assigned to in the previous MochiComi Online event, I was able to get my one-shot published just two months after we met. Some even provided me with their contact
information, which greatly encouraged me to continue my work. (30s) – I was nervous about participating for the first time, but I met some wonderful editors and received their contact information. It was a great opportunity for me, as I often find it difficult to concentrate at the on-site editorial department because I’m distracted by my surroundings, yet I don’t have the courage to approach the editorial department directly. Also, because I was able to decline requests in advance, I was able to connect with major publishers who I had kept my distance from at the on-site editorial department, thinking, “I might not be able to reach them on my own.” I was touched by the accurate advice I received and the unexpected praise I received for my modest efforts. My future challenges and goals became clearer, which really motivated me. I hope to use this experience to advance my career and make great strides in the future. (30s) ■When meeting an editor for the first time, would you prefer an online meeting or an in-person meeting (such as at a doujinshi sales event)? 70.6% of respondents said they were “happy” or “somewhat happy” about online meetings, while 29.4% said they were “happy” or “somewhat happy” about in-person meetings. This shows that an online format is more popular when meeting with editors for the first time.

As a general rule, work data should be stored in one URL field, but in practice, some people store multiple pieces of data together. In this situation, 50.8% of manga editors said they would like to limit their submissions to two or less. While showing a wide range of works may increase your chances, many editors tend to prefer submitting only works that you’re confident in or that you want to draw.
