ABEMA, the new television of the future, has released a new key visual for the November Grand Sumo Tournament, which will be held at the Fukuoka International Center from Sunday, November 9, 2025. In this visual, Oonosato and Toyonoryu, the two top wrestlers in the East and West rankings, appear in imposing poses. The composition, with the two yokozuna positioned back to back, exudes a sense of dignity and tension befitting the finale of the year leading up to the winter tournament. Nandina and foxes, long considered symbols of good fortune, flank the two, creating a striking design that harmonizes traditional beauty with Japanese style. Nandina is an evergreen shrub native to Japan, blooming white flowers in summer and bearing red berries in winter. Due to its name, which sounds like “nandina” (meaning “to turn misfortune”), it is beloved as a symbol of protection from evil and good fortune, and has long been used as a lucky tree in kadomatsu (New Year’s decorations) and New Year’s decorations. Furthermore, foxes, messengers of the gods, have a deep connection with the Inari deity, and are symbolic of bountiful harvests and good fortune. The motif embodies the spirit of the wrestlers and prayers for purification, fitting for the November tournament just before the new year. After the visual was released, many fans reacted to the powerful composition of the “Reiwa era’s two yokozuna,” Onosato and Toyonoryu, standing side by side, with comments such as “Both yokozuna together!”, “So cool!!!” and “Wow, so cool.” on ABEMA Grand Sumo Official X (formerly Twitter). The design, featuring the dignified posture and the striking red of the nandina, drew widespread praise and excitement. ABEMA will broadcast every bout of the November tournament live for free, from the Jonokuchi to the final bouts. Be sure to tune in to ABEMA to watch the wrestlers’ heated matches, accompanied by easy-to-understand commentary from the sumo commentators. ■ “ABEMA Sumo 2025 November Place” Broadcast Overview Period: November 9th (Sunday) to November 23rd (Sunday), 2025 URL:
