This second exhibition, curated by Yoko Nose, senior curator at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery, features artwork by young contemporary artist Shiori Higashiyama, themed “Afterimages of Records,” decorating the construction fencing surrounding the “Yaesu 1-Chome North District Type 1 Urban Redevelopment Project,” a large-scale mixed-use redevelopment project directly connected to Tokyo Station and Nihonbashi Station, which Tokyo Tatemono is promoting together with landowners. In addition, this exhibition is planned and supported by Tokyo Tatemono’s “Arthouse Project*3,” launched this year. Through collaborations between art and urban development and support for young artists, we aim to preserve local culture for future generations and further promote the development of the attractive Yaesu-Nihonbashi area by creating a lively atmosphere during the large-scale construction period. *3 Related release: https://tatemono.com/news/20251016.html ● About the artist/works HIGASHIYAMA Shiori Completed the Department of Painting at Tama Art University in 2013, and the Department of Painting and Oil Painting at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts in 2016. He was selected for the “100 Newcomer Artists” feature in the February 2021 issue of Bijutsu Techo. His major exhibitions include Mujin-to Production (2023), GALLERY & SHOP VOU/Bo (2023), NADiff apart (2023), The Ueno Royal Museum (2024), “Forest Art Festival: Okayama, Land of Sunshine” (2024), and ANOMALY (2025). Focusing on the theme of the boundaries between people, he creates two-dimensional works that repeatedly depict unconscious and conscious actions taken to protect one’s body and mind, as well as objects that symbolize these actions (tents, trees, mattresses, fences, etc.).

Circular and triangular plantings and diagonally gridded hedges divide the city, while triangular tents and square futons placed there provide spaces for people to relax. Higashiyama’s depictions of boundaries spanning the public and private do not sever relationships, but rather serve as buffers and connectors that maintain an appropriate distance from others and man-made objects. The geometric pattern-like composition that divides the entire canvas into a grid is said to be inspired by battle formations and sports formations, signifying a form of physical and mental protection. The paintings, which combine decorativeness through repetition of patterns and a narrative quality evoked by the figures, as well as depth and flatness, create a necessary safer space for everyone within a daydream-like, extraordinary atmosphere. The paintings, which combine different time periods and scales on the fence that constitutes the city’s boundary, are interwoven with elements connected to the area, such as the composition of the former Edo Castle, the structure of Gofukubashi Bridge, and kimono patterns. Construction work began in December 2024, with completion scheduled for fiscal 2029 (with some parts scheduled for fiscal 2032). In addition to offices and commercial facilities, the high-rise building will house an advanced financial human resources support facility and Ascott’s premier luxury brand, “SEN/KA TOKYO by The Crest Collection,” which will be unveiled in Japan for the first time as a long-term
accommodation facility. In addition, the project will cooperate in various ways to realize the underground construction of the
Metropolitan Expressway, creating an above-ground and underground pedestrian network connecting the waterfront space symbolizing the Nihonbashi River Community Hub with Tokyo Station, Otemachi Station, and Nihonbashi Station. The underground network will connect 10 stations underground, the largest number in Japan (including passageways planned for construction within other redevelopment projects). In addition, in May 2025, we opened “FIAN,” a pioneering advanced financial human resources support facility, in front of Nihonbashi Station as part of the Yaesu 1-Chome North District Type 1 Urban Redevelopment Project. We are actively working to enhance the competitiveness of Tokyo as an international financial city, including by offering cutting-edge advanced financial human resources
development programs in partnership with professors from Oxford University and hosting networking events.
