Judges: Daisuke Kumakiri, Tatsuo Hata, Maki Kawai Judge Profile: Daisuke Kumakiri Born in Shinjuku, Tokyo. Entered Tokyo Polytechnic University Junior College. Studied artistic photography and other photographic expression at the Photography Technology Department’s 5th Laboratory. After graduating, he joined the Nikkan Gendai Photography Department. He covered politics, crime, and the Yomiuri Giants professional baseball team. He then left the Nikkan Gendai Photography Department and became a freelancer. He currently works in a variety of genres, primarily for magazines, capturing the moments, spaces, and objects created by people. He also teaches at schools and photography classes. His work utilizes snapshot photography techniques to capture the various faces of the ever-changing city of Tokyo. He later worked at a car dealership and a motorcycle shop. He later began studying photography in order to take over the family business, and, believing in his own potential, aspired to become a photographer. After working as an assistant to photographer Toshinobu Takeuchi, he went independent. He won the 8th Fujimoto Shihachi Photography Award for “Arabirudena,” a photobook covering the Shimotsuki Festival of Yutate Kagura, a traditional Japanese dance and dance ensemble in his hometown. His photobook of the same title was published by the Shinano Mainichi Shimbun. His photobooks include “Mountain Island Yakushima,” “Rainy Days Yakushima,” and “Traces of Yakushima,” as well as the essay “Rain, Then Rain, Rain in Some Places: The Story of Yakushima,” and many others. He sympathizes with novelist Jiro Nitta’s Kato Buntaro, author of “The Solitary Man,” and respects Frank Yasuda, author of “Alaska Story.” Member of the Japan Professional Photographers Society, Member of the Photographic Society of Japan, Lecturer at Japan Photography Institute, Member of the Intel Blue Carpet Project https://www.photohata.com/ Maki Kawai A colorful photographer. She captures a variety of subjects with a unique sense of color. Her natural landscapes and animals are photographed under the theme of “The Colors of Nature.” Recent themes include “cute” flower scenes, snapshots, illuminations, pets, children, and tabletop photography. She is a member of the Japan Professional Photographers Society (a public interest incorporated association). She has held numerous solo exhibitions.
