The Shizuoka Shimbun Press, Shizuoka Broadcasting System, Shizuoka City Museum of Art, and others will be holding the “The World of Kagakui Hiroshi” exhibition. Kagakui Hiroshi (1955-2009), the author of the “Daruma-san” picture book series, beloved by children and with a total circulation of over 10 million copies, will be on display. Kagakui made his debut at the age of 50 and produced 16 picture books in just four years before his sudden death from illness. A former teacher at a special needs school, he poured his passion into creating picture books that would bring a smile to anyone’s face, drawing on the knowledge and insight he gained from years of experience in the field. This exhibition, the first major retrospective of Kagakui’s work since his death, explores Kagakui’s legacy and the appeal of his picture books through invaluable materials, including the original illustrations for all 16 picture books, idea notebooks that served as the source of his creativity, video footage from his teaching days, and unfinished rough sketches. ■Period: January 10, 2026 (Sat) – March 22, 2026 (Sun) ■Venue: Shizuoka City Museum of Art (Aoi Tower 3rd floor, 17-1 Konyamachi, Aoi-ku, Shizuoka City) ■Closed: Every Monday, except Monday, January 12th (national holiday), Monday, February 23rd (national holiday), and the following day, Tuesday, January 13th and Tuesday, February 24th.
