It was a 45-minute journey connecting the past and future between family registers and memories. ■ Overview Family Tree Creation Agency Center Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Sapporo City; Representative Director: Administrative Scrivener Munetaka Watanabe) will be giving a Zoom webinar lecture at the 129th Puramura Juku (Sonjuku) event, hosted by Nakayamagumi Co., Ltd., a Hokkaido-based general
construction company celebrating its 100th anniversary. The theme is “The story of a family tree tracing back 1,000 years – a family tree can only be created now.” Linked to the contents of the new book “A Thousand Years of Family Trees (Historie),” released in August 2025, we will reexamine the “meaning of creating a family tree” from both the perspectives of family registers and memories, and discuss the value of family history that connects the past and the future.

A family tree story that begins with “I didn’t know” It all started when I knew very little about my family and decided to try requesting my family register. After tracing my family history back five generations on my father’s side and six generations on my mother’s side, I became fascinated by it and began specializing in creating family trees. The theme is “Why can’t we create family trees only now?” Family trees aren’t just for tracing the past, they’re also for connecting to the future.

A Journey Tracing the Family Tree 1. “Family Register Research” and “Surnames and Family Crests” – Tracing family registers can be traced back to the late Edo period to the early Meiji period (150-200 years ago). – Surnames represent the “memory of the land,” while family crests represent the “identity of the family.” – Surnames can reveal regional history, such as the Watanabe clan of Sakai, Osaka, and the Kikuchi clan of Kumamoto. → Family registers are “family records,” while surnames and family crests are “family memories.” When these two are combined, a family tree becomes not just a lineage but a family story.

Why family trees can only be created now: 1. “History and current state of the family registration system” – Japan’s oldest family register is the Taiho Code (701) – During the Edo period, the “Shumon Ninbetsucho” (Sect Register of Family Members) was established nationwide, and in 1872 (Meiji 5), the “Jinshin Koseki” (Jinshin Family Register) was established nationwide. – In 1968, the Jinshin Koseki was made confidential by a notice from the Ministry of Justice. – Current family registers also have a retention period of 150 years, and records from the Meiji period will be gradually destroyed. – Japan is the only country in the world that keeps 150 years of uninterrupted family records. → Family registers are both administrative documents and “cultural heritage,” valuable records that can only be accessed now.
