ABEMA, the new TV of the future, broadcast “Osumousan TV” episode 6 ahead of next month’s November tournament, showcasing Azusa Onodera (color: light blue) and Komari Nakamoto (color: pink) of the idol group fav me, affiliated with ASOBISYSTEM, visiting Minato stable in Kawaguchi City, Saitama Prefecture. This project, based on the theme of “Idols Who Have No Experience of Sumo Experience the Real World of Sumo,” kicked off with a tasting of Minato Stable’s chanko nabe. At the start, Onodera and Nakamoto couldn’t hide their surprise at the tea poured into the bowls. When Minato explained, “We use the same tableware to make washing up easier,” the two of them couldn’t help but look convinced. Fried chicken and chanko nabe (stew) filled with plenty of ingredients were laid out on the table. Onodera commented, “It tastes like something a man would like,” and was thrilled by the luxurious meal, packed with protein. When asked, “Is there a meal quota?” Minato Oyakata replied, “There was a time in the past when that was the case, but nowadays you can’t force it,” revealing his coaching philosophy, which has adapted to the times. When Nakamoto asked, “How much does food cost?” the stablemaster replied with a wry smile, “That would cost quite a bit per month.” When Takasho Koji, ranked 56th in the west makushita division (as of the September 2025 tournament), replied, “It costs 300,000 to 400,000 yen,” the two were so surprised they were speechless. While they were eating, the two noticed wrestlers appearing in the room one after another and couldn’t hide their surprise, exclaiming, “There are more and more!” When Minato Oyakata explained, “You can’t touch them until Master says it’s okay to eat,” the two of them couldn’t help but exclaim, “It’s a dog!”, causing Oyakata to smile. It also turns out that the order of meals served at Minato stable is strictly determined, with meals being served in the following order: stablemaster → sekitori (juryo and above) → customers → wrestlers ranked makushita and below. The two fav mes expressed admiration at the traditional etiquette that lives on in the sumo world. When Nakamoto asked Master Minato what prompted him to start sumo, he received a surprising answer: “The truth is, I hated sumo.” He revealed that he had practiced judo in middle school, and had repeatedly been scouted by the previous Master Minato, but had refused. However, he said that his parents’ words convinced him to join the sumo world, and he candidly recounted a time when he couldn’t endure the rigorous training and ran away from his room at 4 a.m. Minato Oyakata, who grew up in what was then known as “one of the toughest stables in the sumo world,” said that as he watches over his apprentices, he now values ”an attitude of communicating even in the midst of strictness,” revealing the sincere feelings he puts into the master-disciple relationship. After finishing their meal, the two went on a tour of Minato Stable. The shoe lockers at the entrance were lined with sumo wrestlers’ footwear of various sizes, and Nakamoto exclaimed in surprise, “Wow, they’re huge!” Nakamoto politely replied, “Excuse me,” and put a sumo wrestler’s sandal up to his face, causing a stir when everyone saw that it was about twice the size of his face. The two also came across a scene where mawashi (sumo belts) were being dried. They got a glimpse of the back of the sumo stables, which is not usually possible to see, and Onodera, seeing the mawashi being dried, commented, “It looks like kelp,” drawing laughter. In episode 6 of “Osumousan TV,” two members of fav me experienced firsthand the intersection of sumo tradition and modern change. By learning about the personality of sumo master Minato, his feelings for his
apprentices, and the daily lives of the wrestlers, the program conveyed the profound appeal of sumo. At the end of the program, Onodera experienced something he “really wanted to do,” and the two of them naturally broke into smiles as they experienced a world that was not only strict but also warm. Episode 6 of “Osu Mou-san TV,” packed with the unknown daily lives of sumo wrestlers, is currently streaming for free on “ABEMA.” Be sure to check it out.
