The article can be viewed on the Artist Cafe Fukuoka website. Mural Project – Regarding Takashi Kuribayashi’s “The Path to the Reversal Site” (2025-) Taro Amano (Chief Curator, Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery) https://artistcafe.jp/news/2043/ About this project This project aims to create a space where artists, local residents, and visitors can meet, interact, and connect, while also embodying the facility’s philosophy of disseminating creativity from Fukuoka to the world and connecting art and society. Through artists’ creative expression, we hope to raise questions about the future of society from Fukuoka and spark thought and dialogue. The community space features a cafe and art-related books, and is utilized as a place for people of all ages and disciplines to meet and learn from each other through workshops and events. To visualize the space’s aspiration to “transcend boundaries, foster connections, and spark a variety of creative activities” through artwork, we have invited contemporary artist Takashi Kuribayashi, whose diverse artistic practice focuses on the theme of “boundaries” and whose work extends from the local area to the world, to participate. Kuribayashi grew up in Nagasaki and currently divides his time between Indonesia and Japan, working both domestically and internationally. He participated in the world-famous international art exhibition “Documenta 15,” and exhibited his representative works “Genkiro” and “Tanker Project” at FaN Week 2023. Taking this opportunity, he has established one of his production bases in Fukuoka. This will be Kuribayashi’s first attempt at mural painting. His continued pursuit of new forms of expression, even as he builds his international career, is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the local creative hub. Kuribayashi’s work is composed of mirrors arranged in a radial pattern. The mirrors reflect the scenery in the room and the visitor’s own reflection, making the viewer a part of the work. Since then, he has been presenting works on the theme of “borders,” using a variety of media, including drawing, installation, and video. At Documenta 15, held in Kassel, Germany in 2022 (participating as Cinema Caravan and Takashi Kuribayashi), he held various events during the event, based around his work “out of the mosquito net.” His work, “Genki Furnace No. 4,” which he presented at the event, was highly acclaimed and won the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Art Encouragement Prize.
