Kazegaoka will be reopening on Saturday, November 1, 2025. A new Savoia S-21 flying boat, featured in “Porco Rosso,” will be installed, allowing visitors to enjoy Neapolitan pasta and sandwiches while admiring the aircraft. Ghibli Park director Goro Miyazaki appeared at a preview event held on Friday, October 31. After explaining the process leading up to the installation of the Savoia S-21, he revealed the behind-the-scenes story behind the renovation, saying, “Rotunda Kazegaoka was previously a rice ball shop, but rather than just eating rice balls while looking at the red flying boat, we decided to paint the interior red and turn it into a place where you can enjoy Neapolitan pasta.” Regarding the creation of this new park facility that allows visitors to experience the world of Ghibli films, the shop owner said, “Rotunda Kazegaoka is a shop that you can enter without entering Ghibli Park, so please feel free to stop by when you come to the park.” ■Greetings from Director Goro Miyazaki (excerpt) The “Savoia S-21” was created as the centerpiece of the “Ghibli 3D Sculptures Exhibition” held in Tokyo this summer. It’s an over-the-top airplane, constructed entirely of wood. We discussed what to do with it after the exhibition ended, but there was nowhere to put it, and it would be such a waste if it were to be discarded. Ghibli Park’s role is to take on such things. Ghibli Park also has an area called the Ghibli Warehouse, which houses and stores all the various Ghibli creations. We weren’t able to build a new building to exhibit the Savoia S-21, but we were searching for a place to display it, and we decided to put it here at Rotunda Kazegaoka. Rotunda Kazegaoka used to be a rice ball shop, but rather than just eating rice balls while looking at the red flying boat, we decided to paint the interior red and turn it into a place where you can enjoy Neapolitan pasta. ■Director Goro Miyazaki’s Answers to Questions from the Media (Partial) Q: Please tell us what the highlights of the “Savoia S-21” are. A: It was designed by Hiroshi Ihara, known as the “god of special effects design.” Normally, wood would create sharp edges, so I imagine it was extremely difficult to create the curved surfaces. If you look closely, you can see the diagonal grooves. By attaching multiple thin boards diagonally, the beautiful curves of the airplane were achieved, and even Hayao Miyazaki was very pleased when he saw the real thing. Q: How do you want your customers to enjoy their time here? A: I think eating Neapolitan pasta while watching “Savoia S-21” would be a really fun experience. Rotunda Kazegaoka is open even if you don’t enter Ghibli Park, so feel free to stop by while you’re visiting the park. Q: Did the inspiration for dishes like meatball napolitan come from “Porco Rosso”? A: The pasta that appears in “Porco Rosso” may be tomato sauce, but I think Japanese people, especially children, think of napolitan when they see red pasta or pasta with ketchup. Regardless of whether it’s accurate or not, I hope you’ll enjoy fantasizing, “I can eat the same thing that Porco and the others ate!” or “Maybe they ate a clubhouse sandwich like this at the Airboat Club.” ■Rotunda Kazegaoka Reopening

Following the end of the
exhibition, it will be relocated to Rotunda Kazegaoka. Since its opening in November 2022, Rotunda Kazegaoka has been a Japanese-themed cafeteria serving rice balls and sweets. However, on Saturday, November 1st of this year, it will be renovated into a cafeteria offering a menu in line with the image of “Savoia S-21.” As part of the Expo 2005 Aichi Commemorative Park, it is open to those without Ghibli Park tickets. *Rotunda Kazegaoka is open on the same days as Ghibli Park.
