decentralization, the structure of society, the way we work, and the way we live are undergoing major changes. Music is no exception, and I believe we need new mechanisms for creating music that are in line with the times, systems for utilizing it, and a change in the mindset of the musicians involved. As a social entrepreneur, I have been involved in the founding of over 20 companies. As a social physicist and innovation management expert, I have also been involved in building startup ecosystems at universities and in the private sector. In particular, my work with the social experiment community “DICT,” founded in 2022, demonstrated that autonomously managing the actions of each individual based on their intrinsic motivation and curiosity can produce significant results. Unpredictable content was created one after another at an unforeseen speed. The recently announced launch of “DICT Music DAO Classics” is based on the results of past DICT experiments and theories of innovation management. It is a project that grows and develops through the excitement of everyone involved in the musical cycle, including composers, performers, designers, and listeners. Please join us in this “sandbox” where a new musical culture is born!
■The Significance of Launching This Project (Producer Mitome Takeki) We are reprinting the text regarding the significance of launching this project that will be included in the program distributed on the day of the performance. △▼△▼△▼△▼△▼△▼△▼△▼△▼ DICT Music DAO DMDc Classics (Dikt Music Dao Classics, hereafter abbreviated as “DMDc”) was launched with the aim of resolving several challenges facing the classical music world (and, in part, the entertainment industry as a whole). The first challenge is that while wonderful works are commissioned and produced every year, there are few opportunities for them to be performed again. To address this issue, we decided to launch a community that brings together composers and performers, fostering a cycle of creation and utilization of music. In order to create this “cycle of utilization,” the “mechanism” for it is also important. We grant community members the “performance rights” for all works continuously produced by this community, and we also provide the sheet music at a low price (currently a flat rate of 110 yen). This will first encourage performers to pick up the sheet music and increase the likelihood that they will perform in front of an audience. By the way, “performance rights” refer to the copyright subsidy associated with performing music in public, such as at concerts or events, whether paid or free. Until now, most new songs have been managed by JASRAC (Japan Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers), which required an application to JASRAC and payment of royalties before performance. However, when community members perform our managed music, they can do so without anyone’s permission, just as they would when performing the works of Bach or Beethoven. In addition, community members receive benefits such as access to a members-only site where they can receive performance advice from composers themselves, access to members-only social media, and the right to participate in members-only in-person events. In addition, we have a system in place where you can earn points by uploading videos of your performance of our music to social media and video-sharing services that have comprehensive agreements with JASRAC, such as YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram, helping to reach even more people. These points can be earned by purchasing sheet music or renewing your membership, and we plan to award them for various contributions. They can be used to get discounts on various service fees, and we also plan to grant additional privileges according to the points you hold. In addition, we have adopted a hybrid copyright management system in which most copyright subsidiaries other than “performance rights” are entrusted to JASRAC, which also benefits composers by promoting the use of their works. The second reason is that “in a commercial world, there is often a divergence between the kind of work labels want to create and the kind of work artists want to create.” To solve this problem, we at DMDc have devised a system that prioritizes artists’ curiosity and intrinsic motivation when creating their works. First, regarding this second issue, it’s said to be a problem not just in the music industry, but in all entertainment industries. For example, in the film industry, production costs per film have skyrocketed, making every film a “must-see” (a must-see). This leads to films being chosen based on past successes that most people will consider “good.” Actors are prioritized based on the number of social media followers they have rather than acting ability or aptitude. There’s also a tendency to collaborate with as many companies as possible. In these
circumstances, screenwriters, actors, and even directors involved in a film often aren’t allowed to stick to the direction they believe in when it comes to production. DMDc does not impose deadlines on composers (who are pre-certified by us). We also do not provide any instructions regarding the direction or specifications of the work. You can compose whenever you like, in your field of expertise, however you like. However, we ask that you keep in mind the following two basic concepts:
https://prcdn.freetls.fastly.net/release_image/142960/55/142960-55-4ceddb7383239c9f3413a99b66e34d2d-3333×1185.jpg
△▼△▼△▼△▼△▼△▼△▼△▼△▼
