It’s hard to pick up and drop off lessons..A survey of 522 parents nationwide about the sources of stress and solutions
Fanss Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Naka-ku, Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Representative Director Yuji Sugiyama) operates one of Japan’s largest children’s learning media “SUKU x SUKU”, with a total of 522 children from 0 to 12 years old. We conducted a questionnaire about the stress of picking up and dropping off lessons for parents of children.

According to the results of the Suku Suku questionnaire survey, 63.2% of parents answered that they were “picking up and dropping off lessons”.
Next, 22.2% said, “I don’t pick up and drop off my child, and I send my child to school alone.”
Do you feel stressed when picking up and dropping off lessons? ■ Waiting time for pick-up
・The ending time is different every time. (45 years old / child 10 years old) ・I’m having trouble waiting. (37 years old / child 8 years old) ・I don’t have enough time to go home, so I have to wait until it’s over. (36 years old / child 10 years old)
It seems that there are many people who want to finish housework as soon as possible, but feel stressed because they have time to do nothing.
■ Time adjustment with work and schedule
・I run out of time for myself. I need to finish my work early. (40 years old / child 12 years old)
・I can’t make my own schedule on days when I have lessons. (42 years old / child 11 years old)
・I have to leave my workplace in a hurry. (35 years old / child 9 years old) ・You have to make arrangements according to the pick-up time. (47 years old / child 12 years old)
・I have no choice but to give up my lessons when it overlaps with my work time. (36 years old / child 8 years old)
When the time for lessons approaches during work, you can only pray that sudden work will not occur. Coordination between work and lessons is a pressing issue for dual-income households.
■ Coordination with other siblings
・It’s hard to have to take a 0-year-old child with you. (36 years old / child 7 years old)
・It’s hard if the younger child doesn’t take a nap. (40 years old / 6 years old child)
・I’m worried about leaving my younger children behind. (30 years old / child 10 years old)
・It overlaps with other siblings’ pick-up and drop-off times and daddy’s return time. (41 years old / child 12 years old)
・Since I have a baby, it is difficult to take him to the bus stop. (37 years old / child 9 years old)
・Even though my siblings are learning, the time is different, so I’m busy with time. (43 years old / child 12 years old)
Families with younger siblings must adjust their lifestyle rhythms to the lessons of older children. Moreover, if you have to wait for a long time while you are doing lessons, you will have more luggage such as milk and diapers, and it will be a hassle just to prepare. ■ Parking lot problem
・The parking lot is narrow. (31 years old / child 5 years old) ・I can’t park my car because the parking lot is crowded. (38 years old / child 12 years old)
・There is no parking lot for pick-up. (37 years old / 6 years old child) ・The road to the parking lot can only pass one car, so if a car comes from the other side, you have to back up to the parking lot. The parking lot itself is narrow, and classes with many students have to park on the street. (44 years old / child 10 years old)
In classrooms with a large number of students in spite of the amount of parking space, parking congestion may occur during pick-up and drop-off times. Waiting on the street also worries the eyes of the neighbors, and it seems that there are many people who feel heavy every time.
■ Road congestion
・You may arrive too early or be late, depending on how busy the roads are. (44 years old / child 10 years old)
・There are days when the roads are crowded, and even if you usually leave the house in time, you may be at the last minute. (40 years old / child 10 years old)
If the time to go to lessons and the rush hour to go home overlap, you will inevitably get caught in a traffic jam. It seems that many people are feeling stressed by not being able to wear it at the right time. ■ Effects of weather
・Drop-off and pick-up is difficult on rainy days. (40 years old / child 9 years old)
・It is difficult to go by car, so it is a problem on rainy days. (39 years old / child 10 years old)
On rainy days, the roads and parking lots are crowded, so I have to leave the house earlier than usual. Therefore, the time for housework will be further reduced.
■ Accidents and security
・It’s less than 10 minutes on foot, but the road is dark, so I think it’s dangerous and pick up and drop off. (47 years old / child 12 years old)
・I’m worried about getting into an accident. (45 years old / child 12 years old) ・ Worried about being involved in an incident (46 years old / child 11 years old)
Anyway, what moms and dads are worried about is whether there will be an incident or an accident. No matter how busy you are, it’s the number one reason why you have to pick up and drop off. If it is far from the class room to the pick-up location, it seems that some people worry even about the distance between them.
■ Conversations with other parents
– Communication with other parents. (38 years old / child 8 years old) ・Conversations with other parents are troublesome. (44 years old / child 11 years old)
・It is troublesome to gather with guardians. (45 years old / child 10 years old) Even if they want to go home early after lessons, many of them seem to get tired because they can’t get out of the circle of chatting with their guardians. Eventually, the children will play with each other, and it seems that it is not uncommon for the time to return home to be significantly delayed.
■ money problems
・Public transportation costs apply. (42 years old / child 11 years old) ・It costs money to park in a paid parking lot. (30 years old / child 4 years old)
In the case of lessons that are far away or there is no parking lot, the cost of picking up and dropping off in addition to the monthly fee cannot be neglected. When deciding on lessons, you should also consider transportation costs.
In this way, there is a lot of stress in the pick-up and drop-off of lessons. I asked how mothers and fathers in the world are coping and what they are devising.
What is the ingenuity to reduce the pick-up stress of lessons? ■ Get help from people around you
・Get help from your family. (40 years old / child 12 years old) ・Leave the younger child in the custody of the grandparents. (33 years old / child 5 years old)
・I am cooperating with my friend’s mother to pick up and drop off. (42 years old / child 12 years old)
・Get a ride in a friend’s car. (40 years old / child 12 years old) ・I am asking the family support. (39 years old / child 11 years old) If there are grandparents living in the neighborhood, or if there are mom friends who are doing the same lessons, it seems that there are many people who can help.
is.
If you can’t rely on your parents or acquaintances, and you finish work late, it might be a good idea to consult with your local family support system.
■ Set rules with children
・Waiting place is decided. (40 years old / child 12 years old) ・If you finish more than 30 minutes early, ask them to walk home. Wait if you can’t. (38 years old / child 11 years old)
・Have them line the end time to reduce the waiting time. (43 years old / child 12 years old)
・As much as possible, go alone. (40 years old / child 11 years old) If you are in the upper grades of elementary school, some people let you go alone depending on the place and time of the lesson. Whether it’s picking them up or letting them go alone, it seems that rules are set so that they can always be in contact with their children. ■ Devise dinner
・I make dinner in the morning. (35 years old / child 4 years old) ・Saving cooking or making ahead of time. (37 years old / child 10 years old) ・While waiting for lessons, go to the supermarket and buy dinner. (36 years old / child 12 years old)
Pick-up time tends to overlap with dinner preparation time. In order to reduce the busyness of the evening, the voices that “prepared in advance” and “dine out or eat prepared dishes on the day of the lesson” were conspicuous.
■ Teach them dangerous places and give them security goods
・Let kids have smartphones. (45 years old / child 12 years old) – Have a GPS. (42 years old / child 12 years old)
・Teach traffic rules when you go out together. (42 years old / child 12 years old)
・Teach how to get to the classroom and where to be careful. (34 years old / child 6 years old)
No matter how well prepared you are, the only thing that worries you is getting involved in an accident or incident. An increasing number of moms and dads are giving their kids smartphones and GPS when they enter elementary school as a crime prevention measure.
There are also many people who walk along the way to lessons and teach them about dangerous places and traffic rules.
■ Change the place and day of the lesson
・I changed my practice. (38 years old / child 11 years old)
・We changed the day of the week. (48 years old / child 11 years old) ・We made it a habit in the neighborhood where it is easy to pick up and drop off. (34 years old / child 6 years old)
– Switched to online lessons. (46 years old / child 11 years old) Some students changed their lessons to a day or time when it would be easier for their mothers and fathers, or moved their lessons to a location near them. Some of them have changed to online lessons and lost the pick-up.
If you can find a classroom that you and your child can agree on, it might be one way to change your lessons.
