Scheduled to be presented at the 9th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Sarcopenia and Frailty

Fujicco Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Kobe / President and CEO: Shoichi Fukui) has developed a yogurt using Caspian Sea lactic acid bacteria through joint research with Professor Hidemi Tsuji, Professor, Department of Food and Nutrition, Faculty of Health and Human Sciences, Sonoda Gakuen Women’s University. It was revealed that handcrafting improves mental and psychological frailty. The results of this research will be presented at the 9th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Sarcopenia and Frailty (October 29-30, 2022). In Japan, a super-aging society, extending healthy life expectancy is an urgent issue. Frailty is a state between a healthy state and a state requiring long-term care, and refers to a state in which physical and cognitive functions decline. Prevention of frailty at an early stage is important, as the chances of getting sick are increased. Frailty is caused by three factors: physical factors such as muscle weakness, mental and psychological factors such as dementia and depression, and social factors such as living alone and economic hardship. It is thought that there will be more, and countermeasures suitable for each factor are required.
“Caspian Lactic Acid Bacteria” is a lactic acid bacterium that originated in Georgia in the Caucasus region, which is surrounded by the Black Sea and Caspian Sea in eastern Europe. This “Caspian Sea lactic acid bacterium” has the characteristic that it can be fermented at room temperature, so you can easily make homemade yogurt at home. This time, we asked elderly people to make homemade yogurt using “Caspian Sea lactic acid bacteria” and investigated whether it could contribute to the mental and psychological factors of frailty. In the trial, 24 elderly people aged 65 or older were asked to make homemade yogurt using “Caspian Sea lactic acid bacteria” for 8 weeks. *1) was examined. As a result, homemade yogurt significantly improved physical function, overall health, vitality, and daily role function (mental), and also significantly improved mental summary score, which is a comprehensive mental index (Fig. 1). ). From these results, it was found that the homemade behavior of yogurt using “Caspian Sea lactic acid bacteria” improved mental QOL. Participation in the trial itself was not only an opportunity to participate in society, but some of the participants also changed their behavior, such as sharing homemade yogurt with their families and neighbors. It was also expected that the handmade yogurt using this would be an opportunity to promote social participation. So far, Fujicco has clarified that yogurt using “Caspian Sea lactic acid bacteria” has high swallowing aptitude and that grip strength is improved when used in combination with exercise. and can contribute to countermeasures against physical factors. This time, it was clarified that “Caspian Sea lactic acid bacteria” can also contribute to countermeasures against mental and psychological factors associated with frailty.
In Japan, where a significant increase in the elderly is expected, it is expected that preventive measures against frailty will become increasingly important in the future. At Fujicco, we hold a forum titled [Health Habits of Lively Seniors: The Secrets of Homemade Yogurt and Frailty That You Want to Know Correctly] (scheduled to be delivered in November and December). We will strive to spread the use of this as a way of life and achieve the health of all people. [Image

Health-related QOL was investigated using the SF-8 questionnaire. SF-8 is widely used internationally in epidemiological studies, etc. The questionnaire used to evaluate health-related QOL included eight scales (1. physical function,

Abstract:
【Purpose】
Since the Lactococcus cremoris subsp. cremoris FC strain can be fermented at room temperature, homemade yogurt is easy. Taking advantage of this advantage, in this study, we investigated the effect of making yogurt using the Lactococcus cremoris subsp. cremoris FC strain on frailty.
【Method】
An 8-week single-arm study was conducted in 28 elderly people (72.2 ± 6.3 years old). During the study, participants made homemade yogurt at least once a week and participated in 30-minute online discussion sessions every two weeks. In addition, before and after the
intervention, we conducted a questionnaire about frailty using SF-8, GDS-15J, EAT-10, preventive care checklist, Oral Frailty Index-8, and ring bite test.
【result】
The analysis was conducted on 24 subjects, excluding 4 subjects who made yogurt less than 10 times. The SF-8, a health-related QOL questionnaire, showed significant improvements in physical function, overall health perception, vitality, sub-items of daily role functioning (mental), and mental summary scores. In addition, a stratified analysis of SF-8 physical and mental summary scores in subjects with an initial score <50 (below the national standard) showed significant improvement in both summary scores. Significant improvements were also observed in the GDS-15J and care prevention checklist, but no significant improvements were observed in the EAT-10, Oral Frailty Index-8, and ring bite test. [Conclusion] It was shown that homemade yogurt behavior is effective in improving social, mental and physical frailty. Contact information Fujicco Co., Ltd.
